As one of the biggest gaming phenomenon of 2020, Among Us has become more famous than any other video game title released this year, including extremely anticipated titles such as The Last of Us Part 2. Among Us now appears to be something of a household name when it comes to the gaming community, and millions of casual gamers, content creators, and streamers have joined the fun bus on an endless source of innovation and fun.
Among Us stayed in some type of fame purgatory for most of its early life, having a decent player base between its release back in 2018 and the summer of this year. However, as the development team from InnerSloth continued to invest an exorbitant amount of effort and time into enhancing a then unpopular title, 2020 became Among Us’ lucky year, overshadowing hit titles like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.
The timing of Among Us’ incredible rise to popularity is also no coincidence, as fun games such as Jackbox and Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout also did immense work in terms of providing light-hearted fun to millions of players otherwise quarantined by the current coronavirus pandemic. Furthermore, Among Us has given a colossal amount of fan-requested content such as videos, mods, drawings, and animations.
Based on Google Trends Year in Search 2020, Among Us is the most searched video game on the most used search engine in the world. This places Among Us in front of (in descending order) Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, Valorant, Genshin Impact, The Last of Us Part II, Ghost of Tsushima, FIFA 21, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Call of Duty: Warzone, and Dragon Quest Walk.
While Google Trends does not particularly mention that Among Us had the most hours played and the most number of concurrent players compared to any game this year, it’s not a big stretch to come to a decision that the number of searches – along with the totally inevitable presence of the game last summer – can equal such incomparable level of popularity.
Among Us’ place in terms of maximum popularity has no doubt come and gone, provided that its fame peaked between September 27 and October 3 of this year, but the impact it has created is irrefutable. Titles such as The Last of Us Part 2 captivated a large number of gamers with its high-quality design, colossal anticipation, and the controversy which followed its release. Fall Guys encouraged much of the same outflow of innovation that Among Us did. However, neither of the two games was able to achieve the same following as Among Us.
It is uncertain what will replace Among Us, though it’s clear that something will come along which will become the next big thing in the industry. However, as the year nears its end, among all the madness, self-isolation, and political turmoil, many will also remember that fulfilling feeling of successfully indicting and kicking out an innocent crewmate.
