Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 producer Ryota Niitsuma gave a glimpse into the game's development. Specifically, how characters for that game were chosen today.
This thread of insight could be used to extrapolate what Capcom's policies will be like for Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. Specifically, it seems that Marvel put extra emphasis on characters that would show up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe years before they made their debut on screen, like Nova and Doctor Strange, to get gamers used to the idea and able to identify with them.
So what characters are some less obvious candidates for the games, given Marvel's upcoming slate of movies? We all know that Spiderman and even Wolverine (given the legacy of the character) are likely additions, but what about characters that were absent from Marvel vs Capcom 3? We've already seen this is likely to be true by the inclusion of Captain Marvel, who won't debut until 2018's Avengers: Infinity War Part 1.
All of the heroes we've seen get pushed in UMvC3 are likely to return if they're in the MCU, so we'll just focus on new characters, and one returning character.
As the big bad of the MCU, it's pretty easy to theorize that we'll be seeing Thanos return to the Versus series after his absence in Marvel vs Capcom 3. Oddly, the first reveal trailer does not point to Thanos as the big bad at all, instead hinting at Ultron (and perhaps Sigma), or some fusion of the two as the villain of Infinite - but that doesn't mean the mad Titan won't be in the game.
Thanos was not the most popular character in the first two Marvel vs Capcom titles, and will hopefully receive a massive revamp if he is included in MvC: Infinite.
Keep in mind that Thanos was very important to the original Infinity War plot, and since then, has made his play for the Infinity Gems in the comics several times over the past 4 decades - adding MvC: Infinity to his list of conquests should be a no-brainer.
Paul Rudd's Ant-Man has been one of the most popular characters to come out of Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The mix of witty banter and size changing abilities would make him one of the most unique heroes in Marvel vs Capcom should he be added.
While Ant-Man has made cameos in previous Marvel vs Capcom titles (such as during Hawkeye's Level 3 Ultimate in MvC3), he's yet to be a playable character.
The Wasp shares a slot with Ant-Man because her powers are similar, alongside being able to fly - so it's unlikely (but still entirely possible) that both might end up in the game.
The king of Wakanda, after the events of Marvel's Captain America: Civil War will make his solo debut in 2018 - conveniently, just after the planned release of Marvel vs Capcom Infinite.
Black Panther's never been in a Versus title, but given his popularity after his reveal in Cap 3, we think that it would be a massive disservice to the Marvel fans that would be looking to pick up this game.
Scarlet Witch is a bit of an odd character for Marvel. Her powers have evolved and changed in the many different iterations of the character over the years, and that's no different in the films - changing from the "hex" based power revolving around luck to more of a standard telekinesis and forcefield type power.
She's been featured prominently in both the second Avengers movie as well as Captain America: Civil War - while she doesn't have a solo film on deck, it'd be a little odd to see Marvel not take advantage of all of that publicity.
Who doesn't love another big-body character for the game? Groot's personality, despite his limited vocabulary, would make for some awesome interactions in the game, especially if Rocket Raccoon will make his return from Marvel 3.
And besides: the potential for a mini-Groot super is too hilarious to ignore, potentially mirroring Felicia's level 3 super from UMvC3. Given the Guardians expected role in the Infinity War movies, this is almost a guarantee.
Who do you think we missed? Who else could be coming for Infinite? And who would you like to see from the Capcom side? Let us know in the comments.
