Supports always had it kind of rough in Overwatch. They have to listen to endless "I need healing" spam from that Genji player who thinks he can 4v1, they're tasked with keeping the team alive, and to top it all off, they get blamed when things go wrong. But lately, they've had it even rougher than usual. After patch 1.10, the rate at which healers gain "On-Fire" status appears to have gotten nerfed. This is leading to less Skill Rating gained.
For support players, they are being forced to use their ults and play offensively more often than they otherwise would. As one user said on the Overwatch forums:
You ninja-nerfed Fire for Assists and for Mercy her only source of fire is to Rezz now. That is so backwards, it is not even funny. When you are doing your jobs as a healer well and don't have to rezz often, you get punished with awful Sr gains. I just had a game with 2 Rezzes in 10 Minutes for 18 SR. If i get a rezz/Minute is usally get 27SR+, but Mercy IS NOT ONLY REZZING. +18 SR for doing my job well - that's awful. That's frustrating. You want us to let the team die on purpose to rezz and gain normal SR?
Another user gained half of the Skill Rating despite playing the same games as his friend, who was playing Soldier: 76:
Me and a mate duo'd. I was Mercy he was Soldier. We went 5 wins 2 losses. I gained a total of 55 points ( roughly 18 points a win ) He gained a total of 106 points ( roughly 35 points a win)
I usually play Lucio but we recently had a nice combo of damage boosted solider so we stuck with it. I can understand me being 10 or so points behind, depending on player performance but him gaining nearly double points just seems completely wrong.
Blizzard even confirmed that these changes were intended, as Max Thompson, Quality Assurance Lead said:
While I cannot go into detail regarding how the system works at a code level, I can tell you that my team verified the changes that were implemented. If you have feedback regarding the rate at which SR is accrued, I suggest that you compile your feedback and continue to voice your opinion on the Competitive Discussion forum.
While the changes may be intended, encouraging healers to blow their ults (especially Mercy players, by using Rez often) isn't ideal and doesn't feel great to play. Players who are playing their roles should be rewarded by the game, not punished.
