Hot on the heels from last weekend's announcement, we wanted to check in with another one of the FGC's prominent figureheads. As one of the series' devoted fans, Persia took some time out to discuss her thoughts on the insights on the highly anticipated release.
What were your initial thoughts after seeing the trailer featured at PlayStation Experience?
My initial thoughts when I saw the trailer was, "WE ACTUALLY DID IT!" The effort from the community to hold strong even when there seemed to be no hope for anything new really did get acknowledged and, to me, that was such a rewarding feeling.
The graphics, gameplay, and the characters were all beautiful! This game will be perfect for the next gen and I know the final game will be even better than what we saw at PSX.
You’ve been following the Vs. games for many years. Do you feel the game can be just as enjoyable despite the absence of X-Factor or call-in assists?
That's the beautiful thing about VS games. They're all so vastly different, they all bring their own style, and upon release, they were all bringing something new and innovative to the table.
I believe that people play Vs. games not only for the creative style and freedom, but because some of the most beloved characters ever known are involved. Even with the single inclusion of Mega Man X will bring a huge wave of fans to the next installment.
Accessibility plays a huge factor in the decision to revert back to the traditional 2v2 format. As a veteran, do you feel that this configuration will be just as exciting as 3 versus 3 combat?
I think I still have quite a few years to go before I could call myself a "veteran," but I think going back to the 2v2 style is genius! It will definitely be as exciting because we're still going to experience the same type of "Marvel feel" when it comes to gameplay and freedom.
With the addition of the Infinity Stones, I really do think the intention is to offer an infinite amount of combinations, teams, possibilities, and variety. With one less character on the team, it will force you to really canvas the field and find that perfect synergy. But honestly, it's our community that makes these games exciting, not the other way around. Marvel will still be Marvel, and we will still be here for the ride.
Briefly give us your thoughts on the possibility of Infinite featuring less buttons in order to make the game more appealing to new players.
Most new players might not be willing to purchase an arcade stick right away, so less buttons could help pad players stay intrigued with the game to eventually move on to arcade stick in the future. Our game is in great hands and I know they will do what's best for the game and more.
You mentioned plans to fall back from FGC duties due to other real-life obligations that take precedent. Will you be planning to cast once again following Infinite’s debut?
When I started my new job, I knew I wouldn't be able to be as involved for a while. Luckily for me, I've really got in tune with my new job faster than expected and my schedule has already started to open up. Since EVO, PSX was the first time I was able to travel and I used it as a bit of a test to see how traveling would fit into my new schedule.
It went well! And it gives me a better idea of how to manage my time moving forward. 2017 is already looking amazing, so I'm ready to start traveling again and being more involved. And, yes, I'll definitely commentate Marvel Infinite! We didn't come all this way for me not to.
What are some ways that you plan to personally draw on new blood to give Infinite a shot?
There are going to be so many awesome ways to bring people in.I'm going to be producing new and reviving old content, Brokentier is making some amazing changes that is really going to help (but I can't speak on it much at the moment), online, etc. Online tourneys and sessions — I've got huge plans. [laughs.]
So let’s brainstorm a bit. Give us your top 5 dream list of characters (who haven’t been confirmed) make the cut in Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite. What other game modes would you like to see included aside from the standard online ranking/casual match features?
Okay! Top five wishlist: Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Dante, Black Panther, and Venom. As for some game modes, I'd like to see are an amazing story mode, high level trial modes/missions, and an in-depth tutorial system like Skullgirls.
Looking at the big picture, what advice would you offer to purists who feel Infinite is deviating from its heritage?
I've said it before and I'll say it again, open your mind. If there's anything the MvC universe has taught us, its the fact that our game is just different from all else. Infinite actually feels closer to the original Marvel Heritage more than anything. Newer marvel players definitely owe the series a little respect and, at the very least, some research on where the series began.
If they're real "purists," then this concept really isn't that foreign. And obviously, we still have a long way before release! We didn't work and wait for this long to count it out after seeing 2 minutes of early build footage. Stay strong, you guys!
