The earlier rumors about a Pokemon GO and Starbucks partnership announced on December 8th were fulfilled this morning. Niantic Labs officially announced that over 7 thousand new Pokestops would be opening around the US, thanks to their partnership.
Starting 11 A.M. PST on December 8th, this new partnership will transform 7,800 company-operated Starbucks stores in the United States into PokéStops and Gyms, giving Trainers even more places to play and to engage with their local Pokémon GO communities. And to cap it all off, Starbucks is creating a special-edition Pokémon GO Frappuccino® for everyone!
Previously, the only confirmed Pokemon GO partnership was a trial launch with McDonald's Japan, where the tie-in strategy successfully pumped their profits by more than 27% per Advertising Age's report. But that was all the way back in August, during the game's initial record-breaking launch, and the playerbase's fallen off since then. The winter weather settling upon western shores might also hinder foot traffic -- a unique factor for an augmented reality game.
Then again, it wouldn't stop drive-through traffic through the many Starbucks around the nation. And a hot cup of coffee is exactly what you'd get in the winter anyhow.
...admittedly, that might hurt sales of the special edition Frappuccino.
