The researchers at Silph Road's still at it, even as the popularity for Pokemon GO's faded sharply since its initial launch. And good of them to do so! Because you're all gonna want to start playing again.
Gen 2 is on the horizon.
However, as noted by the data miners, there's nothing to indicate a release date, or even if the Generation 2 content's anywhere near complete. The moveset data, or even the moves associated with Gen 2 Pokemon in general, aren't in the code as yet. Furthermore, updates need to occur both server- and client-side, meaning that even as the app gets updated with the missing data, it might be yet longer before they're ready to turn the switch on.
It is, of course, unlikely that they'll suffer the server loads the game launched with. Not after a drought of communications from Niantic Labs and the fall-off in general interest. But the various improvements made, especially the daily engagement mechanisms, may yet rekindle the flame.
