HBO made a great decision to produce a TV adaptation of Naughty Dog’s popular video game, “The Last of Us.” Thousands of gamers play “The Last of Us” every minute. The TV adaptation is just as successful.

Across HBO Max and linear channels, the series’ pilot episode was watched by 4.7 million viewers, making it HBO’s second-biggest episode since 2010. In just two months, it reached a whopping 40 million viewers.

There are so many interesting characters in HBO’s “The Last of Us,” such as the caring and compassionate Tommy Miller. While the cable network did its very best to ensure the series was as close as possible to the game, it took risks and made some changes to some characters.

In the game, Tommy and his brother Joel have a strained relationship. But in the series, they are very close. Let’s get to know Tommy a bit better. What happened to him after the outbreak? Is he still alive in the upcoming second season?

Who Is Tommy Miller?

Portrayed by “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” star Gabriel Luna, Tommy is Joel’s younger brother. In both the game and the TV series, Tommy is depicted as an idealistic and a compassionate person who often contrasts with his brother’s more hardened and pragmatic demeanor.

Prior to the outbreak, he fostered a closer and supportive relationship with Joel, embodying a sense of resilience and hope. The series also featured his military background, showing his adeptness at combat and survival, crucial skills in the post-apocalyptic setting of “The Last of Us.”

His character arc delves deeper into themes of morality, loyalty, and search for redemption. HBO depicted him as somebody who, in spite of harrowing circumstances, strives to keep his humanity and sense of justice intact.

Furthermore, his interactions with other survivors and his passion for building society highlight his inherent goodness and leadership qualities. His journey throughout the TV series delves into the sweet and sour moments of brotherhood, the impact of trauma, and the hope for a brighter future, making him an unforgettable character in the HBO show’s narrative.

What Happened To Him After The Outbreak?

In HBO’s “The Last of Us,” Tommy’s journey after the outbreak is both transformative and challenging. At first, he and his brother struggled to survive the pandemic, relying heavily on the skills they have and each other. As society collapsed, his innate sense of hope and morality urged him to seek a greater purpose.

Thus, he found himself being part of the Fireflies, a militant organization focused on developing a cure for the outbreak and resisting the authoritarian policies of military quarantine zones. His time with this group is marked by difficult decisions and exposure to the grim realities of life in a post-apocalyptic world. However, his disagreement with the group’s violent tactics led to him parting ways with them.

Afterward, he sought a new beginning, so he found refuge in Jackson, Wyoming. There, he contributed significantly to the building and maintenance of a thriving survivor community. This place represents a rare beacon of safety and normalcy amid the widespread chaos and devastation. His initiative in rebuilding the community reflects his desire to create a space where people can live with dignity and security.

Throughout his stay in Jackson, he becomes more deeply connected with Joel despite their differences in approaches to survival. This, though, allows Tommy to stand back to his ground and reclaim a sense of purpose and stability.

Is Tommy Alive In Part 2?

With a brand-new season premiere of “The Last of Us,” fans are asking, will they see more of Tommy in Part 2? The good news is that he is alive and well as the story continues. He will be with his wife, Maria, in Jackson, the settlement he founded and leads. You’ve watched how Tommy and Joel longed for each other when they saw each other again for the first time in decades. Joel even confided in Tommy, saying the latter helped prevent the Fireflies from killing Ellie Williams, the girl Joel was taking care of, thus thwarting their plans to find a cure. Tommy assured his brother he would have done the same.

For years, the two go on patrol together. Looking back at the game, these brothers are the ones who save Abby Anderson from the Infected. However, after the three take refuge at a lodge where the Washington Liberation Front soldiers (this is Anderson’s group) are staying, things turn muddy for the brothers. The soldiers and Anderson realize who they are, so they launch their revenge on Joel.

Though Tommy triumphantly stops them from killing Joel, he gets injured. His wife, Maria, refuses to send a group from Jackson to pursue Anderson and her soldiers, so Tommy heads over to Seattle, where the group is headquartered, to exact revenge himself and save Williams from further trouble. While it’s not yet clear how HBO will present Season 2, it is evident that Tommy will still be part of this brand-new season.
