Insomniac Games Confirms Wolvering and Spider-Man 2 Set In Same Universe

Marvel’s Wolverine and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 are both part of the same Marvel world, according to Insomniac Games. No solo Marvel games have been closely related to each other until now, which has irritated some fans given how intertwined the films are. However, Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine will help to correct this by establishing a shared universe.

The debut trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine is purposefully ambiguous, and it appears to be a long way off from the Spidey sequel, but it does include a few small hints. To begin with, Wolverine does not appear to be in New York City. He looks to be at a rural pub, probably in Quebec, as evidenced by a license plate in the bar’s corner. However, because Insomniac has said that the two games are set in the same world, it seems probable that Wolverine and Spider-Man will cross paths.

Insomniac revealed that Marvel’s Wolverine is a solo game directed by Brian Horton on the PlayStation Blog. It is also part of a “new, unique world” that includes Spider-Man and now Wolverine. Venom and other villains are teased in the teaser for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, so Peter Parker and Miles are sure to have their hands full.

There’s a chance Wolverine may turn up and offer a hand, but it’ll not be easy to fit everything into the sequel. Given that the characters co-exist in the same universe, it appears that there is a plan to have them cross over at some time.

Other Marvel characters who already exist in the informally dubbed Marvel Games Universe were hinted at by Insomniac. Doctor Strange, the Avengers, Daredevil, and a host of other characters are all mentioned in Marvel’s Spider-Man. It wouldn’t be shocking if additional characters in this realm got their own games.

Marvel hasn’t had a video game realm to fall back on until now. Despite being released by Square Enix, the same company that published Marvel’s Avengers, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is a stand-alone title.

This has given every developer some creative flexibility in terms of the narrative they may tell, but it has also hampered some of these games. It’s been disappointing not to see this in a video game, given that all of these characters exist in the same universe in the comics and now the movie. Thankfully, Insomniac appears to be reversing this trend.
