NBA 2K22 Cover Superstars Officially Announced

Only a few weeks ago, cover art for NBA 2K22 surfaced, revealing which players will be included on the box art. However, because NBA 2K games are known for having a variety of covers, it’s quite possible that this was only one of them. As of today, that appears to be the truth, as 2K has officially revealed NBA 2K22 as well as four other box art options.

Each cover, of course, corresponds to a particular version of NBA 2K22, which is now available for pre-order and will be released globally on September 10th. The regular version costs $59.99 on previous-generation consoles such the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and $69.99 on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Luka Doncic, a Slovenian player for the Dallas Mavericks and the Slovenian national team, is featured on the cover.

He’s also on the Cross-Gen Digital Bundle’s cover, which was painted by renowned artist Charly Palmer. This package costs $79.99 and includes both the previous and new-gen versions of the game for PlayStation and Xbox platforms.

Palmer also designed the cover for the $75th Anniversary Edition, which has three players 2K calls as “among of the most famous NBA players who have changed the sport.” Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Dirk Nowitzki, and Kevin Durant are the three players that have been on the cover of NBA 2K three times.

A Japanese exclusive cover depicting Rui Hachimura, a Washington Wizards player, will be included, as well as a GameStop exclusive cover for the regular version. That one is noteworthy because it depicts Candace Parker, a six-time WNBA All-Star and WNBA Champion, marking the first time a female player has graced the cover of an NBA game.

There hasn’t been any gameplay video released yet, with the formal announcement comprising primarily of live-action material. It will not, however, offer any form of free upgrade route, meaning that anyone who buys the PS4 or Xbox One version will have to pay for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions as well. Last year, this move sparked debate, as did 2K’s decision to raise the game’s price from $60 to $70.

It’s also not the only yearly sports championship that does something similar. FIFA 22 and Madden NFL 22 will be released for both previous and new-gen platforms, although new-gen improvements will only be available in the Ultimate Editions.
