The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes, the third installment of Supermassive’s multi-part horror franchise, has a terrifying new trailer that, along with an eerie tour of ancient Sumerian ruins, confirms that the game’s gameplay will be revealed later this month. Following the popularity of its milestone horror adventure Before Dawn, developer Supermassive Games has announced The Dark Pictures, a horror anthology film.
Man of Medan, the first of these, was published nearly two years ago. The short adventure takes place on the high seas aboard the titular ship. After a series of terrifying incidents, it follows a group of friends who find themselves in a life-or-death battle to escape the enigmatic ship.

House of Ashes, the forthcoming game, was first teased at the end of The Dark Pictures Anthology’s second installment, Little Hope, which was released last year. Like Man of Medan before it, the witchcraft-inspired story varies drastically based on the player’s choices. Still, anyone who persevered to the end was rewarded with a glimpse of the eerie tomb-like setting in the next title.
Today’s trailer, released by publisher Bandai Namco, shows off more of House of Ashes’ sinister archaeological site and promises gaming on May 27. In this game, Supermassive focuses on Iraq, where the trailer depicts a group of soldiers who have discovered a long-buried structure.
The spectator seems to be watching the characters from the perspective of a creature chasing an innocent couple. Like a bat seen in the dark, it uses echolocation in its vision. The trailer’s final shot, which shows a clawed, elongated series of fingers ominously curling around a pole, confirms this theory. The trailer doesn’t say anything about what’s going on in House of Ashes, but next week’s gameplay reveal, which begins at 9 a.m. PT, is expected to include more details.
Although Supermassive’s The Dark Pictures Anthology project is still in its early stages – the initial idea for the series was to release eight games, and House of Ashes is just the third – fans are hoping that the creator will consider creating a real Until Dawn sequel. According to Supermassive, the 2015 smash hit could never get a sequel.
Due to the game’s sheer amount of player choice, the complexities of making a direct sequel will be almost insurmountable, according to the developer. Because of the game’s web of choices, players may have ended up in slightly different locations, with entirely different characters living until the finish. The writers decided to move on to The Dark Pictures Anthology as a result of this.
The gameplay reveals for The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes will be released next week, so stay tuned. As June approaches, which will see E3, Summer Game Fest, and other events, fans can expect a flurry of updates.
