The release date for Sam And Max: This Time It’s Virtual! has been pushed back to July 8. The VR title, created by Happy Giant, was first revealed in August at Gamescom 2020, promising all of the hilarious and irreverent shenanigans that the legendary Freelance Police are renowned for.
Since their first appearance in the pages of their own Dark Horse comic in the late 1980s, the delightfully demented duo of Sam (a hard-boiled canine detective who is the pair’s relative level head) and Max (a “hyperkinetic rabbity thing” with a temperament as wild as his appearance suggests) has appeared in several video games, with the first being the fondly remembered Since then, the pair’s rights have been transferred to Telltale Games, who created a series of 3D adventure games culminating in 2010’s Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse.
Aside from their primary adventures, Sam and Max have appeared in games like Telltale’s Poker Night at the Inventory, and Skunkape Games is presently working on remasters of their earlier games, as well as Happy Giant’s next virtual release.
Sam And Max: This Time It’s Virtual! will be published on Oculus Quest on July 8, 2021, for $29.99, according to PCGamesN. It will be an Oculus exclusive at first, before expanding to Steam VR and Viveport Infinity later this year, and finally to PlayStation VR in early 2022.
In addition to the release date, publisher Big Sugar just released a new video for Sam And Max: This Time It’s Virtual on YouTube, which shows the Freelance Police attempting to assist the player with a virtual escape room in their normal hilarious fashion. Take a look at the video below.
Licensed VR games have become more prevalent in recent years, with titles like Iron Man VR and Star Wars: Vader Immortal allowing players to experience what it’s like to wear Tony Stark’s famous armor or wield a lightsaber. In addition, games like Resident Evil 7 and Star Wars: Squadrons have included VR compatibility, enabling players to gaze about as if they were inside an X-Wing cockpit or a decaying home.
Sam And Max: This Time It’s Virtual! is set to continue the franchise’s wild antics while also adding some new twists owing to its VR capabilities. When Sam And Max: This Time It’s Virtual! releases on the Oculus Quest on July 8, fans will be able to assist the Freelance Police in solving their newest case.
