The new Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack announcement is not going over well with fans, as evidenced by the dislike count for the latest trailer. With over 50,000 dislikes on the latest trailer and counting only days after it was released, the announcement appears to be a rare blunder by the gaming behemoth. The dislikes have little to do with the video’s quality and are more a reflection of Nintendo fans’ outrage over the recent Expansion Pack announcement.
Nintendo fans were shocked to learn that the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack, which is set to be released soon, would cost $49.99 per year. Fans reacted angrily to the announcement, which cost $30 more than Nintendo Switch Online’s basic package on social media.
This came just a few weeks after the Expansion Pack was announced, allowing players to access and play classic Nintendo 64 and SEGA Genesis games on their Nintendo Switch. What was once thought to be a massive marketing win for Nintendo quickly turned sour as players balked at the cost of playing some of their favorite classic games.
This rage has spilled over onto the Nintendo channel’s YouTube video of the announcement trailer. Only two days after the trailer’s release, the video has received over 50,000 dislikes compared to 15,000 likes. With over a 3:1 dislike-to-like ratio, the video is on track to become one of Nintendo’s most unpopular videos. And, just as fans did on Twitter after the announcement, the video comments are filled with fans expressing their outrage at the Expansion Pack’s price.
At last month’s Nintendo Direct, it was announced that Nintendo Switch owners would be able to access classic Nintendo 64 and SEGA Genesis games. Players salivated at the prospect of being able to replay classic games such as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Mario Kart 64.
It was also viewed as an opportunity for older games to share their childhood experiences with their children, bridging the generation gap in gaming. Instead, Nintendo has been taken aback by the move.
It’s not the first time Nintendo has had a public relations blunder with the Switch. With the recent Nintendo Switch OLED announcement, Nintendo disappointed its fans, as many players expected the next version of the Switch to have 4k capabilities and improved hardware. Even so, that disappointment did not enrage Nintendo fans to the extent that the price of the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack appears to have. Nintendo has yet to respond to the announcement’s fan reaction publicly.
