When playing Old School RuneScape for the first time, there is a lot for you to get your head around. You are bound to hear a lot of phrases that may confuse you surrounding many features of the popular MMO. This often surrounds the game’s currency, with the likes of OSRS gold, OSRS gold buying, and OSRS gold selling often doing the rounds. Not to mention, you have skill levels to raise, dungeons to search, and so much more.
But fear not, as these top tips will help you get started on your way to being a full-blown adventurer in the world of Old School Runescape.
Getting Started
At first, you will find yourself on Tutorial Island, where you will learn the ins and outs of the game. Here, you can select a name for your character, before customizing them. You will then find NPCs that have yellow arrows above them, and they will inform you of the basics that you need to know to get started.
When you get to the end of the tutorial, you will be asked if you want to be an Ironman. This isn’t something that you should necessarily opt for at this stage since it won’t let you trade with other players, so choose not to at this time.
Memberships
You have the option to either have a paid membership or free-to-play. Those who have an active membership will gain access to far more content, which includes a bigger world, with many more quests, and more skills to train.
As for those who do not have a membership, there is still a fair amount of content to enjoy in the early game. This drifts away a bit more as you reach the mid-game, where you will want to look into having a membership to enjoy more content.
Skills
There are a number of different skills to train in OSRS. For free-to-play players, you will have 15 skills that are divided into combat, gathering, and artisanal. Your combat skills include Attack, Strength, Defence, Ranged, Magic, Hitpoints, and Prayer. Gathering skills meanwhile are Mining, Fishing, and Woodcutting. Then there are Artisian skills, which include Runecrafting, Crafting, Smithing, Cooking, and Firemaking.
When it comes to combat, you will need to focus on Strength to make the most of a melee approach. You will also want to make sure you look into Attack to keep your accuracy as high as possible. For ranged combat, you will obviously be focusing on your Ranged level and will want to research the best ammunition to use. Then there’s magic-based damage, which draws focus to your Magic level, which also has an impact on your accuracy. As players participate in combat, they will earn XP whenever they do damage. You can earn more XP via Magic spells too, which is rewarded regardless of whether it hits or not.
Equipment Stats
When you get gear, it will be accompanied by certain statistics that affect a number of variables. This includes accuracy bonuses which will improve your chances of hitting your opponent. There are strength bonuses to increase the damage you inflict and defense bonuses that will increase your chances of blocking certain attacks. Then there’s also the prayer bonus, which will slow down the decay of prayer points.
Beyond the Tutorial
Once you have finished the tutorial, you will be sent to Lumbridge Castle where you will receive basic supplies for your inventory. You can then deposit your items if you choose to, and get ready to start playing. To do so, you can train combat by killing the many inhabitants of Lumbridge, such as goblins, chickens, and cows. Alternatively, you could choose to train in non-combat skills, or even take part in nearby quests.
You are now ready to get started in Old School Runescape.
