Niantic Announces Pokemon GO Valentine’s Day 2021 Event

Many video games that continue to receive regular updates usually celebrate the different holidays that take place within a year. Perhaps one of the most popular and jam-packed holiday celebrations, asides from the Christmas and New Year seasons, is Valentine’s Day.

Many titles have already announced their respective Valentine’s Day events, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s Kiss Confirmed LTM. Now, Niantic’s Pokemon Go has also revealed what players can expect during this year’s event dedicated to Valentine’s Day.

During the Pokemon Go Valentine’s Day 2020 event, Audino and Alomomola from Generation 5 were introduced to the mobile game. Asides from that, Niantic also utilized several other Pokemon that were pink, cute in appearance, and generally worked well with the Valentine’s Day theme—incorporating them into Eggs, Raids, wild encounters, and even rewards for Field Research.

Pokemon Go’s Valentine’s Day events from prior years basically worked the same way as well, featuring adorable Pokemon like Chansey, Smoochum, and Clefairy. That being said, this year’s event will run from February 14 at 1:00 PM through February 18 at 8:00 PM local time. What’s more, players can look forward to Psychic-types Munna and Musharna to be the highlight of this year’s event.

Long-time Pokemon Go players may find it strange that Niantic chose these two particular Pokemon for the game’s Valentine’s Day 2021 event, especially since the Kalos region Pokemon were introduced to the game last December and opened up other Fairy-types like Slurpuff and Armoatisse.

On the other hand, Niantic didn’t hold back in terms of the in-game Avatar cosmetics and event-exclusive stickers. These outfits and items would definitely make the players’ in-game characters match with the dreamy, whimsical Pokemon.

Asides from these, Niantic confirmed even more exciting additions for the event. The developer states in a recent post that Pokemon Go’s Valentine’s Day 2021 event will feature paired Pokemon in the wild, like Volbeat and Illumise or Plusle and Minun. Pokemon such as Eevee, Luvdisc, and Woobat will also be made available to players through the hatching of Eggs.

If a player is lucky enough, they may even get to stumble upon Feebas as a wild encounter, or perhaps obtain either Gardevoir or Gallade that has the unique attack Synchronoise after evolving Kirlia. There’s also a chance that players will be able to encounter a Spinda that has a heart pattern if they manage to finish off Field Research tasks successfully.

A lot of the Pokemon that were previously mentioned will also be featured in Raid battles. More specifically, One-Star Raids will feature Illumise, Volbeat, Feebas, Munna, Ralts, and Espurr; Three-Star Raids will include Espeon, Gardevoir, Umbreon, Gallade, Togetic, and Alomomola; and players can expect Five-Star Raids to feature Latias and Latios. Lastly, Mega Raids will have Pidgeot, Gyarados, and Ampharos.

Pokemon Go fans can also look forward to a Valentine’s Day Collection Challenge, which gives players the task of catching 12 different Pokemon—both Latias and Latios included. Before the Valentine’s Day event kicks off, though, players can participate and enjoy in this year’s Lunar New Year event, which runs from February 9 through February 14.
