Pokemon Legends Arceus Will Introduce New Combat Mechanics

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl have finally come after fans eagerly awaited remakes of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. The passion for Pokemon’s fourth generation continues to grow as another title, Pokemon Legends: Arceus adapts the Sinnoh Region into the Hisui Region.

In the most recent episode of Pokemon Presents, players received a new peek at what the game has to offer, including new Hisui-based creatures and new combat system dynamics.

On February 26th, Pokemon Legends: Arceus was unveiled. There was little information revealed about the game other than the fact that it would take place in the past of the Sinnoh Region and that it would be an open-world game.

With two trailers shown to the public, it’s apparent that Legends is going to be very different from past Pokemon games. Fans of the RPG series will have to get used to a new fighting system. In this game, battles are handled in a unique fashion, with Pokemon moving numerous times in different round cycles depending on their attributes and move set.

If the critter’s move set and stats aren’t strategic enough, the player can modify the speed, and attack stats of different moves using two new move sets dubbed Agile Style and Strong Style.

Naturally, a new Pokemon game means new creatures to capture. Wyrdeer and Basculegion, evolved versions of Stantler and Basculin from earlier Pokemon games, are introduced in Legends: Arceus on their own. It also features Braviary and Growlithe, as well as two Regional variants. The new regional Growlithe appears to be at least partly rock-type, whilst the Hisuian variant of Braviary appears to be psychic-type.

There’s a lot to be excited about in Pokemon Legends: Arceus for fans. It has the potential to be a fantastic way to spice up Pokemon’s 25-year-old formula, if not to set the tone for what the franchise may anticipate in the future. The game’s open-world design opens up a plethora of possibilities, and these new fighting techniques and monsters have already been shown to elevate the gameplay to new heights.

Fans will have to wait for either a demo or the game to understand how to use the new fighting styles, although learning how to use a new Pokemon combat style might be entertaining for certain gamers. The new fighting system promises to be more exciting than traditional rock-paper-scissors battles, but how well fans will receive it remains to be seen.
