Friday Night Funkin’ is an open-source donationware rhythm game that was first released in 2020 for a game jam. A team of four Newgrounds users developed this game; specifically Cameron “ninjamuffin99” Taylor, David “PhantomArcade” Brown, Isaac “Kawai Sprite” Garcia, and evilsk8r.

Profiles Of Some Of The Best Friday Night Funkin’ Characters

Like many other games in the industry, one of the best parts of playing a game is discovering and getting to know the game’s characters. In this article, we look at some of the best Friday Night Funkin’ characters based on how incredible and personable these characters are. Let us begin.

Pico

Pico is the antagonist of Week 3, a background character in Week 5, a supporting character in Week 7, and he is not just an antagonist because he is also the future playable protagonist of the upcoming level against Darnell. He has also been confirmed to be selectable as a general playable character in Freeplay in the future. His track as an antagonist includes Blammed, Philly, and of course, Pico. Also, he has three confirmed future tracks as a player character, namely Darnell, 2Hot, and Lit Up.

Boyfriend

Alternatively referred to as The Boyfriend, Boyfriend is the protagonist in Friday Night Funkin’. His main goal is to gain approval to date the other character, who is Girlfriend, but he must sing-off against her evil ex-rockstar father, Daddy Dearest, as well as many other characters that stand in his way toward love for Girlfriend.

Tankman

Sergeant John Captain, alternatively referred to as Captain or more commonly by his pseudonym Tankman, is the antagonist of Week 7. His tracks include Guns, Ugh, and Stress. He has also been confirmed to be selectable as a playable character in the future. Tankman is the third guest character introduced to Friday Night Funkin’, the first being Skid and Pump, and the second being Pico.

Girlfriend

If we have the character named Boyfriend, of course, we also have Girlfriend. Girlfriend, alternatively referred to as The Girlfriend, is the deuteragonist in Friday Night Funkin’. If a deuteragonist sounds unfamiliar to you, it is defined as the actor taking the part of second importance in a classical Greek drama. Girlfriend is also Boyfriend’s partner, obviously, and the daughter of Daddy Dearest and Mommy Mearest. She is usually seen sitting on top of speakers, bopping her head to the tempo of the music, cheering on Boyfriend, and keeping track of combos. While not necessarily an antagonist, she is the first opponent faced by Boyfriend, where she teaches the player how to play the game with her only track, Tutorial.

Pump

If you do the research, you will find out that Pump comes with a sidekick, which is Skid, making the duo called Pump and Skid. They are best friends. Together, they go head to head with Boyfriend in Week 2 of the game in a rap battle and have some pretty dope lines in their songs. Skid and Pump team up to form the spooky kids. Pump is known for his deeper voice and ability to deliver his lines in such a classic manner.

Skid

If we have Pump, we have Skid. Skid is Pump’s partner, bringing out the spooky from both of them. Skid is often obsessed with October, and his Halloween costume is adorable. He likes to do the spooky dance while his skeleton head comes alive with each step.

Mommy Mearest

Alternative known as The Mom, Mommy Mearest is the antagonist of Week 4, one of the two primary antagonists of Week 5 along with her husband named Daddy Dearest, and the secondary antagonist of Friday Night Funkin’ as a whole. Her tracks include High, M.I.L.F., and Satin Panties. She also shares the tracks Cocoa and Eggnog with her husband, Daddy Dearest. She is also the demonic pop star wife of Daddy Dearest and the mother of Girlfriend.

Monster

Monster is the secondary antagonist of Week 2 and Week 5, the latter of which also features him as a background character. He forcefully takes over the final tracks for both weeks, Monster and Winter Horrorland, respectively.

Daddy Dearest

Also known in the game as The Dad, Daddy Dearest is the antagonist of Week 1, one of the two primary antagonists of Week 5 alongside his wife Mommy Mearest, and the main antagonist of Friday Night Funkin’ as a whole. His tracks include Dadbattle, Bopeebo, and Fresh, and he shares the tracks Cocoa and Eggnog with his wife, Mommy Mearest. He is actually an ex-rockstar who serves as the demonic husband of Mommy Mearest and Girlfriend’s father. He attempts to eliminate his daughter’s boyfriend by any means possible since he disapproves of the relationship between the two. Sounds like a storyline, right? Wait until to hear about the last character on this list.

Senpai

Senpai is like a heartthrob, a character that most high school kids will easily love. He is handsome, and his pixelated design seems to make him the coolest character on Friday Night Funkin’. He seems to fancy having Girlfriend as his own and has this goal of taking her away from Boyfriend. Senpai rapped against Boyfriend in Week 6 to try and win Girlfriend’s heart, and during the second song, he seemed to become very frustrated and uttered some mean words to Boyfriend during the rap battle.
