Hong Kong is looking to stoke the “Gundam” fanbase worldwide as one of its posh hotels, Ocean Park Marriott Hotel in Aberdeen, has unveiled Gundam-themed rooms where guests can stay. Yes, you read it right. Gundam-themed rooms.
These Gundam-themed hotel rooms are at par with an even, also Gundam-themed, the Ocean Park x Father of Gundam – Okawara Kunio 50th Anniversary Exhibition, happening at Ocean Park from April 1st to June 4th. That means fans can enjoy all things Gundam from the moment they step into the renowned Hong Kong park and ending off the day in a Gundam-themed hotel room.
“A must-see exhibition for all anime and mecha fans! Legendary Japanese mechanical designer Okawara Kunio created a craze that has swept the world for half a century. Now you can dive into the global popularity of mecha at Ocean Park between 1 April and 4 June 2023, the first stop for the Father of Gundam — Okawara Kunio 50th Anniversary Exhibition,” the event’s official website stated. “Look back at his many ground-breaking mechanical designs, from the classic Yatterman and King of Braves GAOGAIGAR to the Mobile Suit Gundam series, a worldwide cultural icon for over 40 years, and many other pioneering anime works.”
The website added that spectators could see giant figures of the designs, including the much-loved RX-78-2 Gundam and MS-06F Zaku II, as well as the newer creations. Also will be exhibited are rarely-seen hand-drawn artwork that will showcase Kunio’s expertise in mechanical design across decades.
With the guests’ stay in these Gundam-inspired rooms, it has been said that they will also get the opportunity to grab hold of exclusive Gundam and Yatterman collectibles.
There will be three themed rooms in total, featuring Gundam & Haro, Yatterman, and Votoms. The Gundam & Haro room is predicted to be the most in demand.
Bookings for the rooms are currently ongoing. Prices start from around $318, and these themed rooms will be there from April 5th to July 4th.
“Gundam” is a Japanese military fiction media franchise from the creation of Yoshiyuki Tominio and Sunrise, which is now Bandai Namco Filmworks. This franchise features gigantic robots called “mecha,” bearing the name “Gundam.”
The franchise started in 1979 with “Mobile Suit Gundam,” a TV series that defined the “real robot” mecha anime genre as it features large robots called mobile suits in a militaristic setting.
Its popularity grew and spawned several TV series, films, manga, novels, and even video games that many fans support across the globe.
