It’s not dragon. It’s dragoon. “The Legend of Dragoon” is an RPG relatively older than other popular games. This video game was developed by Japan Studio and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation in Japan in 1999, North America in 2000, and Europe in 2001.

“Unveil a fantasy of magnificence, deception, magical combat, and retribution as you join swordsman Dart and his companions to harness the spiritual forces of Dragons and triumph over evil,” said the description of the game on its official page on the PlayStation website.

In this game, players can use a distinctive and innovative tactical combat system, transform in Dragoons, and unleash the most extraordinary powers. They may also control various characters wielding unique weapons and Dragoon attacks powered by this RPG’s many elements.

The game is so well-received that fans are clamoring for a remake. But is a remake possible? Let’s explore some facts.

Fans Want A Remake

First off, believe it or not, there is actually a petition on Change.org, the world’s largest petition platform, which calls for a “The Legend of Dragoon” remake or sequel. As of press time, the petition has already garnered 7,077 signatures. You can visit that page and sign the petition, too, if you want.

“Yes, a sequel would be great, but at this point I’d be happy with a remake, a reboot, or even an HD upscaled version with updated HUD/UI, and I’m sure I’m not the only one,” said a certain Tim Leavey who started the Change.org petition.

Fans and gamers also said that “The Legend of Dragoon” is worthy of a remake, mainly because of its distinguishable traits from other JRPGs. These include the combat additions, the dragoon attack mechanic, the game’s quirky music unheard in other RPGs, and the story’s creativity.

They also suggested some improvements that could be done once the game is remade, such as a version where transformations won’t take so long to load, the chance to use MP beyond the Dragoon form to fire off some weaker magic attacks, and more.

Hopes Shattered

Over the years, there had also been signs that a remake could be possible, such as Sony Computer Entertainment renewing the trademark for “The Legend of Dragoon” in 2012 and Sony’s rumored acquisition of Bluepoint Games.

However, the fans’ hopes for a possible remake seemed to have shattered after Sony’s official acquisition of Bluepoint Games in September last year, also making it clear that Bluepoint Games had no intention of pursuing The Legend of Dragoon any time soon. Furthermore, Japan Studio, the game’s developer, also disbanded and closed at the beginning of 2022.

Also, the game’s director, Masayuki Kasebe, spoke with the media in 2021, saying, “It has been a rough 21 years. Our parent company (Sony) showed no interest in the IP whatsoever. Our game (Legend of Dragoon) sold well in the US, but it didn’t take off here (in Japan).”

That’s very sad.

How About A Sequel?

However, despite those events and statements, some fans still wish and hope for a remake. Or, a sequel. Yes, a sequel.

They’d want a “The Legend of Dragoon 2,” a prequel, or a spinoff in the same universe.

“In a sequel, we could mess around with the combat balance and implement that lesser magic idea, but we could also go so much further. New transformations, customizable weapon types, and combat stances that change the type of rhythm game you play when you attack would all be neat ideas,” wrote TrueTrophies’ Lee Brady.

So far, news and updates about the game have been very quiet. A remake may be “unlikely,” but “not impossible,” especially among very hopeful fans.
