Technology corporation IBM and Europe’s industrial manufacturing company Siemens have been partners for a long-time when pushing forward each other’s offerings. But this time, sustainability is the name of the game for these two companies.

Big Blue and Siemens announced today that they are further strengthening this long-term partnership by collaborating to develop a combined software solution, integrating each other’s products for systems engineering, asset management, and service lifecycle management. 

News published on IBM’s official website indicated these two companies are doing the partnership amidst increasing competitive pressures, tightening labor markets, and growing environmental compliance objectives that necessitate organizations to implement a more holistic approach across their product and asset lifecycles. 

“A significant portion of product innovation and differentiation contains electrical, electronics and software components. Yet, manufacturing companies are struggling to bring new products to market on time, as the current tools, processes, and information to manage these components are siloed and disconnected,” IBM Senior Vice President for Product Management and Growth Kareem Yusuf said. 

Yusuf added that in order to bridge these gaps, IBM and Siemens are collaborating on a digital thread environment, with the aim to integrate sustainability practices throughout a product’s lifecycle, from design and production – to operation, maintenance, and beyond. This connectivity will thus contribute to an improved quality of products among organizations. 

IBM and Siemens are going to develop a combined software solution to help these organizations optimize their product lifecycles, making it much easier to enhance traceability across processes, prototype and test concepts much earlier in development, and adopt product designs that are more sustainable. 

The objective is to help these organizations boost innovation and time to market, thereby leading to enhanced quality and lessened costs. 

This new combined SysML v1 standards-based suite of integrated engineering software is projected to provide support for traceability and sustainable product development with the use of a digital thread that connects mechanical, electronics, software design, electrical engineering, and implementation altogether. It will span the product lifecycle, from early design to end-of-life management.

“Together, Siemens and IBM will deliver a simulation-driven systems and software engineering solution that is designed to cover the full operational lifecycle,” said Siemens Digital Industries Software President and CEO Tony Hemmelgarn. “This can empower our customers to innovate by helping to reduce product development costs, drive continuous improvement and create operational efficiencies across the extended enterprise throughout the product’s operation lifecycle.” 

Hemmelgarn added the two companies are developing this to help businesses further improve and enable them to develop better products.
