Since the COVID-19 pandemic erupted, many companies have restructured the working setup for their employees, allowing a work-from-home (WFH) setup, or hybrid, a mixture of office and WFH. 

Somehow, the global pandemic has become a “blessing in disguise” for these workers because they can save time during the commute or travel, and money with the WFH setup. It also allowed them to spend more time with their family at home. 

One of the several companies that adopted this working setup is Dell. In 2021, during the height of the pandemic, Dell’s top executives seemed to have told their employees they could work from home for long. Many of Dell’s staff started working strictly from home during COVID-19. The company even provided its workers with equipment to do their jobs remotely. 

More so, during that time, Dell’s chief operating officer, Jeff Clarke, said this decision was an “investment” that the company would just keep their employees working from home rather than summon them back to the office. 

“After all of this investment to enable remote everything, we will never go back to the way things were before,” Clarke stated in a Q2 2021 earnings call. 

He added that, on an ongoing basis, Dell expects 60 percent of their workforce to stay in the WFH setup or have a hybrid schedule where they work from home and just report to the office once or twice a week. 

Even Dell’s chief executive officer Michael Dell echoed this. On LinkedIn, the company bragged about its productivity reaching an all-time high, adding that forced office work is “doing it wrong.”

“Sharing some thoughts on the future of work, including the importance of culture along with some data from our own experience. #PlayNiceButWin,” the CEO said on LinkedIn, posting a WFH photo. 

But things are about to change for Dell’s employees – again. Clarked has already informed the employees via email this week that they would have to come back to the office three days a week. Of course, many were disappointed, especially since there were previous statements from Dell’s executives saying that the WFH setup would stay. Some employees even said they would rather quit than return to the office. 

However, Clarke clarified that it will be a gradual transition. Employees still have the freedom to choose and work things out concerning their schedules. 

The new ruling also only applies to employees within an hour’s distance of the nearest Dell office facility. Employees can also choose which days of the week they will report to the office, provided there should be three office days. 

Employees have various reasons why they prefer the WFH setup, including fewer amenities in the office, no child care, inadequate parking, shared workspaces, insufficient resources, and more. 

“We know many of us have arranged our lives around remote work over the past three years,” Clarke said in an internal memo seen by technology new website, The Register. “This is not a light switch transition. We understand it will take time to prepare and adjust to being in the office more regularly again. This is the beginning of us more clearly defining hybrid work for our company.

The availability of the Facebook Messenger app on the Apple Watch has been making the lives of the owners of the wearable much easier. With this, they no longer need to shift to their smartphones or computers just to reply to messages from the app, for instance.

The app also allows users to send likes, voice clips, stickers, and more without transferring to the smartphone app. The Facebook Messenger app on the Apple Watch was introduced in 2015.

Meta said it is pulling out the Facebook Messenger app on the Apple Watch starting this May 31st. 

Screenshots of the notification that Apple Watch users received were shared on Twitter. The notification said, “Changes to Messenger on Apple Watch. After May 31st, Messenger won’t be available as an Apple Watch app, but you can still get Messenger notifications on your watch.”

Media outlets reached out to Meta for clarification. They got this statement, “People can still receive Messenger notifications on their Apple Watch when paired, but starting at the end of May, they will no longer be able to respond from their watch. But they can continue using Messenger on their iPhone, desktop, and the web.”

Furthermore, Meta did not give a reason why it is pulling out the Facebook Messenger app from the Apple Watch. 

This change comes as Meta’s other instant messaging app under its wing, WhatsApp, is working on a native WearOS app. Additionally, this move also comes as Meta has been hoisting some changes around Messager. A few months ago, Meta started testing the ability for users to access their Messenger inbox without going outside the Facebook app. 

Musk slams WhatsApp

Meanwhile, in other Meta news, Twitter and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has recently lambasted WhatsApp, saying it “cannot be trusted.”

The billionaire was replying to a tweet from the director of engineering of Twitter, Foad Dabiri, who had a not-so-pleasing encounter with WhatsApp and his Google Pixel 7 Pro. 

“WhatsApp has been using the microphone in the background, while I was asleep and since I woke up at 6 a.m. (and that’s just a part of the timeline!) What’s going on?” Dabiri tweeted, sharing a screenshot of his WhatsApp’s microphone usage. 

At first, Musk replied to his tweet, saying it was “weird,” but two days later, perhaps after some time pondering, he retweeted it and said, “WhatsApp cannot be trusted.”

WhatsApp responded to the issue, saying, “Over the last 24 hours, we’ve been in touch with a Twitter engineer who posted an issue with his Pixel phone and WhatsApp. We believe this is a bug on Android that mis-attributes information in their Privacy Dashboard and have asked Google to investigate and remediate.”

WhatsApp added that users have complete control over their microphone’s settings. Once granted permission, the app only accesses the microphone when a user calls, or records a voice note or video. It also said that even then, end-to-end encryption protects these communications, so WhatsApp cannot hear them. 

Google did not immediately issue a statement regarding the matter.

  1. Bard is now available for all

You know that artificial intelligence or AI is hot and trending right now. Well, Google’s version of it, Bard, has just been announced it is now available for everybody. This is regardless of whether you were part of the waitlist or not. 

Google is also introducing a range of new features to this AI tool, such as supporting Korean and Japanese languages, and a simpler way to export generated text to Gmail and Google Docs. 

Plus, there are also a new dark mode feature and visual search features. The company said it is adding more functionalities in the future. 

  1. 3 new products unveiled 

During I/O 2023, Google’s Pixel hardware were in the spotlight, as the company unveiled three new products in this catalog, namely the Google Pixel Fold, the Google Pixel Tablet, and the budget-friendly Google Pixel 7A. 

  1. AI-powered capabilities for Android

AI is not just dominating Google Search. During the keynote, the company announced Android will also get AI-powered capabilities. One of these is Magic Compose which will be part of the Messages app, giving users the ability to reply to texts using AI-generated responses.

Moreover, there is also a feature that will allow users to utilize AI to create their own wallpapers. Instead of choosing from a range of premade options, they can describe an image, which their devices will then generate with the use of Google’s text-to-image diffusion model.

  1. AI-powered snapshots on Google Search 

The most talked-about AI nowadays, ChatGPT, is present in Microsoft’s Bing search engine, providing better search results. Will Google let itself remain behind? Of course not. 

The company also announced that Google Search will get a significant update with AI snapshots. Once users opt into a new feature called Search Generative Experience (SGE), they can start seeing AI-powered responses at the very top of search results for some queries, providing more context to searches.

The Google Home app has been helping individuals set up and control their Google Nest thermostats, doorbells, cameras, Chromecast, speakers and displays, and many other compatible devices. And during I/O 2023, it was announced it is getting a revamp.

The redesigned app is no longer an invite-only public preview. It was made available to users on Thursday, May 11th. This revamped Google Home app also includes various enhancements, such as an improved camera interface, a new Favorites tab, and more. 

  1. Duet AI for Workspace 

During the event, Google also unveiled a new name for the suite of AI tools it is bringing to Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides, Google Meet, and Gmail. That is, Duet AI. 

Other highlights during Google I/O 2023 are the AI-powered Magic Editor on Google Photos, the new Perspectives feature on Google Search (which lets you get responses from actual human beings), and the new and improved Wear OS 4 launching later this year.

Italy’s Antitrust Regulator Investigates Apple Over Alleged Abuse In Apps Market – Apple Inc. News

Not so long since Apple was involved in an antitrust case involving video game developer Epic Games, with this news previously reported here on PVP Live, it is finding itself in another antitrust case, this time over Apple’s alleged abuse in the apps market. 

Another antitrust case for Apple

Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato (AGCM), an antitrust regulator or watchdog in Italy, said yesterday it had launched an investigation and probe into the Cupertino-based tech giant for allegedly abusing a dominant position in the market for apps. 

According to a press release published by the Italian antitrust watchdog, Apple may have positioned itself at an unfair advantage that favors it by implementing a stringent privacy policy for developers of third-party apps, particularly on the tracking of iOS users. These applications should agree to pop-ups for their advertisements.  

AGCM also said it was also worried third-party developers and advertisers were in a not-so-favorable position about the data quality Apple made available. 

This “alleged discriminatory conduct” can cause a decrease in third-party advertisers’ advertising revenues, and restrain competitors from taking part or remaining in the app development and distribution market, only to the benefit of Apple’s applications. 

“According to the Authority, since April 2021, the Cupertino company has adopted, for third-party app developers, a more restrictive privacy policy than the one it applies to itself. In addition, third-party developers and advertisers would also be disadvantaged in terms of the quality of the data made available by Apple,” AGCM said in its press release, already translated to English.

These new rules from Apple were implemented around two years ago when the company introduced its App Tracking Transparency (ATT) policy. This was decried by several companies whose revenues were severely affected. Spearheading this was Meta Platforms, Inc., the parent company of Facebook, whose operations heavily rely on targeted advertising. Meta reportedly said it lost around $10 billion in revenue because of the policy. 

“Starting from April 2021, Apple has adopted a privacy policy, for third-party app developers only, more restrictive than the one the company applies to itself,” the Italian antitrust regulator went on. “The different treatment is mainly based on the characteristics of the prompt that appears to users to acquire consent to the tracking of their ‘navigation’ data on the web and on the tools adopted to measure the effectiveness of advertising campaigns.”

Apple responds

Apple has responded to this probe. The company emailed news outlets saying it implements its privacy rules “equally to all developers, including Apple.”

“We will continue to engage constructively with the AGCM to address any of their questions,” Apple further noted.

According to European Union’s competition law, companies found guilty of abuse of market dominance could be fined up to 10 percent of annual turnover. 

The Cupertino-based technology company is among the various tech giants in the United States that European regulators have repeatedly scrutinized.
