“Apple Learning Coach gave us the tools to be able to meet educators where they are, no matter the level of their technology knowledge,” said Jennifer Robbins, director of elementary education at Downey Unified School District.

After successfully finishing the program, each coach in the program gets a coaching portfolio they can use to implement everything they have learned. One of the coaches who benefited from this is coach Marnie Luevano. 

“We work with teachers to identify new ways their students can demonstrate what they’ve learned beyond the use of a worksheet or simply writing an essay,” Luevano said. “And then the kids are taking off with it — they’re so excited.”

This coach also added that each time they visit the schools, the students are always excited to tell them about the podcasts they are watching or present their designs. It is more than just finishing the assignments; it is all about the fun. 

Luevano’s role as a coach at Downey is helping the school district’s teachers reimagine how they utilize Apple technology to supercharge their lessons. 

“The results for Downey have been measurable,” Apple said.

This recent leak also showed a remarkable switch to Taptic Buttons, though a first-gen Action Button is still present.

There are also the latest leaks claiming Apple is restricting the iPhone 15 range’s USB-C charging and data transfer speeds for all cables not certified through its Made for iPhone (MFi) program. As a response, the European Union (EU) has reportedly threatened to prohibit the sale of iPhones in its member nations. 

According to a news report in Die Zeit, EU’s Industry Commissioner, Thierry Breton, reached out to Apple and said, “Devices that do not meet the requirements for the uniform charger are not approved on the EU market.” 

On the surface, Apple can simply ignore this. EU’s new rules for common charge regulation were passed in October 2022, but they will not be effective until December 2024 and will apply only to devices released after that date. Apple’s iPhone 15 and 16 may be released in September 2023 and September 2024, respectively.

Tofel’s profile said he has been covering technology since 2004 and has used ChromeOS since Google launched the CR-48 in 2010, reviewing several Chromebooks since then. He also worked for the Chrome Enterprise team of Google between 2016 and 2017, supporting the Android app support’s launch.

Still incomplete

Tofel also shared the code behind the Google Tasks web app integration with ChromeOS. Nonetheless, everything still seems incomplete and a work in progress. Experts are saying the feature is not likely to come very soon.

Right now, Samsung Galaxy Chromebook users are not able to access Google Tasks without them launching another Google app initially. They must first open Calendar, Chat, Gmail, Drive, or a file in Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides. Only then can they proceed to Tasks on their screen’s right side and launch the web app.

The About Chromebooks piece also said that, by the looks of everything, Google might prioritize simplicity over complexity as it offers easy access to the web app through the system tray. It also said it is still too early to judge how the final design will appear.

Like on Facebook and Instagram, Twitter netizens can control who they want to view their tweets. But apparently, there had been a “security incident” on Twitter wherein the public saw those private tweets. 

What’s even more interesting is that, at first, even after users reported this incident, Twitter did not own to it. However, later on, after being identified by their security team, they said they “deeply regret this happened.” 

‘Security incident’

There is a feature on Twitter called “Twitter Circle,” where users can only send tweets to select people and share their thoughts with a smaller crowd. They can also choose who will be in their Twitter Circle, and only those added can reply to or interact with the tweets you share in the circle.

Similar to Facebook’s Friends setting or Instagram Story’s Close Friends setting, this feature on Twitter lets users share private insights, explicit images, or unprofessional statements without risking them being seen by the public. 

However, lately, a glitch has happened across the Twitterverse wherein these private tweets were revealed to the public. 

For weeks, Twitter netizens reported Twitter Circle tweets getting likes and views from accounts not part of their Circles. Initially, the social media platform did not acknowledge these reports, unfortunately. 

But after their security team had identified and fixed them, they said they “deeply regret this happened.”

“Twitter is committed to protecting the privacy of the people who use our service, and we understand the risks that an incident like this can introduce and we deeply regret this happened,“ Twitter said. “A security incident that occurred earlier this year may have allowed users outside of your Twitter Circle to see tweets that should have otherwise been limited to the Circle to which you were posting.”

However, the email failed to address separate reports that said similar privacy breaches were happening to “private” accounts, whose tweets should not be shown to anybody unless they are from approved followers.

Down to around 1,000 employees

Meanwhile, in other – bad – news about Twitter, the popular social media platform’s workforce is now down to just around 1,000 employees from about 8,000 last year after massive layoffs. 

However, hundreds of Twitter workers had already left before the layoffs. News reports say just about 500 engineers are left at the company.

Furthermore, sources told the media that frequent firings are following weekly employee reviews with little to no explanation provided.

“The issue is like the company’s going to go bankrupt if we do not cut costs immediately,” Twitter CEO Elon Musk told the media. “This is not a caring, uncaring situation. It’s like if the whole ship sinks then nobody’s got a job.”

Musk acquired Twitter in October 2022. 

As of press time, according to recent statistics, Twitter had an estimated 450 million monthly active users in 2022, 396 million more users from 2010. Also, its audience has increased by over 40 percent since 2018.

Last week, the multinational digital communications technology conglomerate Cisco Systems, Inc. disclosed a vulnerability in the web-based management interface of its SPA112 2-Port Phone Adapters, which could attract an unauthenticated, remote attacker for them to execute arbitrary code on the devices. 

Can Cisco fix this? Well, the company also said that they are not fixing this vulnerability, so you can feel free to throw the device away in the trash – unless you want to compromise your security. Here are more details about this news.

Tracked as CVE-2023-20126 and tagged “Critical” with a CVSS score of 9.8, the vulnerability is brought about by a missing authentication process in the firmware upgrade feature.

“A vulnerability in the web-based management interface of Cisco SPA112 2-Port Phone Adapters could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on an affected device,” Cisco said in its security advisory. “Cisco has not released firmware updates to address this vulnerability. There are no workarounds that address this vulnerability.”

The company added that an attacker could exploit this vulnerability if they successfully upgrade an affected device to a crafted version of the firmware. If this happens, the attacker can execute arbitrary code on the affected apparatus with full privileges.

According to the official product page, the Cisco SPA112 2-Port Phone Adapters allowed individuals to use their phones over the Internet without compromising voice quality or phone and fax features. This device also provides the benefits of high-quality voice-over-Internet protocol or VoIP without needing to upgrade the users’ existing analog phones.

The product page also said that this product is no longer being sold.

Cisco urged customers to migrate to a Cisco ATA 190 Series Analog Telephone Adapter. This adapter has been available for nearly a decade now. Like the SPA112 adapter, it enables businesses to turn analog devices such as phones, paging systems, and fax machines into IP devices. Companies with enterprise networks, small businesses, and unified communications-as-a-service cloud operations can then utilize these. 

But, this ATA migration may only be a short-term solution, not a very viable one. It has its own end-of-sale and end-of-life update scheduled in March 2024. 

The company also instructed customers on what to do when considering a device migration. Cisco said they must regularly consult the advisories for its products, available from the Cisco Security Advisories page, to find out exposure and a total upgrade solution. 

It also advised organizations to ensure the device will provide for their specific network needs, and that the device must support their hardware and software configurations.

“If the information is not clear, customers are advised to contact the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) or their contracted maintenance providers,” Cisco said.

Upgrading to supported adapters would prevent things like what happened to Cisco’s routers last month when Russian state-sponsored hackers deployed custom malware using those routers, PVP Live previously reported.
