Meta Platforms, Inc., otherwise known as Meta, launched a new feature in one of the platforms it owns, WhatsApp, wherein people in Brazil can now pay local small businesses via the platform’s chat feature. Here’s the news.

Earlier this week, Meta announced that it had launched this new feature that lets users directly pay local businesses via WhatsApp chat in Brazil. 

“People in Brazil will be able to pay local businesses right in a WhatsApp chat. We’ll be rolling this feature out to more businesses in the coming months,” founder, chairman, and CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, said in a Facebook post. 

This new capability is bound to connect small businesses and prospective customers via WhatsApp, thereby reducing the hassles of managing several different websites and applications for shopping and making payments. 

It also unlocks many opportunities in Brazil’s merchant payment market. It is expected that this will enhance user growth across doing business through Meta’s Family of Apps. Meta’s Family of Apps consists of social media giants – Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp. 

“This seamless and secure checkout experience will be a game-changer for people and small businesses looking to buy and sell on WhatsApp without having to go to a website, open another app or pay in person,” Meta said in their official newsroom post. “We’re rolling the feature out… to a small number of businesses, and it will be available to many more in the coming months.”

With this feature, WhatsApp users in Brazil can already pay for products and services using their Mastercard and Visa debit, credit, and prepaid cards issued by a wide range of banks taking part in the service. 

Moreover, small businesses using WhatsApp’s Business version can now link a supported payment partner – for instance, Mercado Pago, Cielo, or Rede – and create an order within the app to accept payment securely from their respective customers.

The funding round was also announced that day, following months of hype surrounding generative artificial intelligence, specifically ChatGPT by OpenAI and other text-generating platforms that utilize large language models, or LLMs, to provide creative, well-thought-out answers to queries from their users. Also, last February, Google, which Alphabet owns, introduced a new conversational technology that competes with ChatGPT, which it calls Bard. Bard will integrate with the search engine and other products. 

Jack Kokko, the chief executive officer of AlphaSense, said the firm is likewise working on a product feature that will summarize financial documents for customers automatically so they can more easily extract critical points. Apple Inc. has pledged to double up its investments, committing another $200 million, for carbon removal initiatives, particularly the removal of carbon from the atmosphere, the company’s official news website said yesterday. It seeks to do this by supporting different projects two years after it made an initial investment for a funding known as the Restore Fund. 

Apple’s vice president of environment, policy and social initiatives, Lisa Jackson, issued an official statement about it, saying, “The Restore Fund is an innovative investment approach that generates real, measurable benefits for the planet, while aiming to generate a financial return. The path to a carbon neutral economy requires deep decarbonization paired with responsible carbon removal, and innovation like this can help accelerate the pace of progress.”

It was in 2021 when Apple Inc.’s Restore Fund was first announced, together with a $200 million commitment that included participation from investment bank Goldman Sachs and non-profit group Conservation International. 

Climate Asset Management, an HSBC Asset Management and Pollination joint venture, will manage this new portfolio. 

According to Apple’s press release, this brand-new funding will aim to remove 1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually at its peak as it generates a financial return for investors.

“For Apple suppliers that become partners in the fund, it will also offer a new way for them to incorporate high-impact carbon removal projects as they decarbonize,” the company added. 

And to monitor and measure the impact of its Restore Fund projects in the most accurate way possible, Apple Inc. is deploying remote sensing technologies. These innovations include Maxar’s high-resolution satellite imagery, Space Intelligence’s Carbon and Habitat Mapper, and Upstream Tech’s Lens platform. These will be responsible for building the project areas’ habitat and forest carbon maps.

Bonus content: What’s next for the ‘Pokémon’ anime? 

“Pokémon Horizons: The Series” will soon launch in Japan, particularly on April 14th. The synopsis for its first episode is now in, and it goes like this, “Liko, a girl from the Paldea region, has enrolled at Sekiei Academy, a boarding school in the Kanto region. Liko is delighted to receive her first Pokemon, Sprigatito, but it doesn’t listen to her at all. While Liko struggles to deepen her bond with Sprigatito, on the other hand, suspicious people appear who are looking for Liko’s mysterious pendant?!”

However, as of the time of this writing, there are no details yet about the international release date for “Pokémon Horizons: The Series.” Nevertheless, The Pokémon Company is already teasing the fans about the new anime

The teaser reads, “In ‘Pokémon Horizons: The Series,’ dual protagonists Liko, whose partner Pokémon is Sprigatito, and Roy will encounter many characters during their journey, including a group led by Friede and Captain Pikachu called the Rising Volt Tacklers. Traveling across the Pokémon world on an airship, the Rising Volt Tacklers include Orla, who enjoys mechanical and electrical work and is accompanied by her partner Pokémon, Metagross.”

A Live-Action Adaptation Is Coming Soon For Original Anime, ‘Do It Yourself!!’

“Do It Yourself!!” is joining many other animes that are getting or got a live-action adaptation. Official news from the official website of “Do It Yourself!!,” an original TV anime by Pine Jam, revealed today that the anime would get its very own live-action adaptation. 

The official news piece said that, like the anime, the live-action adaptation would be shot on location in Sanjō City in the Niigata prefecture in Japan. More details about this new project now in the works will be unveiled this May 28th during an event centered on the anime. 

It was in October 2022 when the anime premiered in Japan and ended with its 12th episode in December 2022. Major anime streaming platform Crunchyroll streamed “Do It Yourself!!” as it aired in the East Asian nation. Crunchyroll also screened the first episode early during the Crunchyroll Expo event, which happened last August 2022.

“Do It Yourself!!” is about what it sounds like. The anime follows the daily lives of six high school girls as they face struggles working on DIY or do-it-yourself projects in the western Japanese city of Sanjō.

The plot is described as follows, “Building furniture and friendships have a lot in common. Intention, effort, and hard work are needed for both crafts. This is a story of girls in a DIY club building both as they carve out their futures. None of it comes easy, but that doesn’t stop any of ’em. Furniture, friendships, and the future—they’re building it all with their own hands!”

It featured the voices of Konomi Inagaki as Serufu Yua, Kana Ichinose as Miku Suride, Ayane Sakura as Rei Yasaku, Azumi Waki as Takumi Hikage, Karin Takahashi as Kokoro Kōki, and more. 

Kazuhiro Yoneda – the director who also worked on “Gleipnir,” “Hozuki’s Coolheadedness” Season 1 and 2, “Yona of the Dawn,” and “Kageki Shoujo!!” – directed “Do It Yourself!!” at Pine Jam. 

Kazuyuki Fudeyasu both wrote and oversaw the series scripts. Fudeyasu is also credited for “Black Cover” and “Dropkick on My Devil!” Meanwhile, the character designer of “Encouragement of Climb” and “The IDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls,” Yuusuke Matsuo, also designed the characters for “Do It Yourself!!”

IMAGO and Avex Pictures are also credited with the original work. 

Yuka Okamoto, who is also credited for “Gleipnir” and “Princess Resurrection,” directed the art, while Ryōhei Sataka of “Gleipnir” and Release the Spyce” of Hifumi, Inc. composed the music. 

Moreover, construction supplies maker Takagi is the “official partner,” and Takagi’s home city of Sanjō in Niigata prefecture is the “official supporter.”
