Apple To Roll Out iPhone 16 With Its Own Modem Chip, Embedded Face ID Feature

As the launch of Apple’s iPhone 16 fast approaches, more news about its features is also coming forward. Two of these features are the modem chip and the embedded face ID. What are the things you should know about these? Here’s the scoop.

In-house modem chip

The Cupertino tech giant has depended on Qualcomm modem chips for mobile data connectivity for years. In fact, the latest iPhone 14 units use Qualcomm modems. However, rumors are circulating about Apple’s development of its own modem chip. Media outlets say these rumors appear authentic and may even have received recognition from Qualcomm’s chief executive officer, Cristiano Amon. 

In his interview with CNBC at Mobile World Congress, he confirmed that the company has “no plans” to provide Apple with modem chips in 2024. 

“We’re making no plans for 2024, my planning assumption is we’re not providing [Apple] a modem in ’24, but it’s their decision to make,” Amon told CNBC.

This points to just one possibility: Apple would be rolling out its own. 

Furthermore, Apple has also not placed an order with Qualcomm, making the claims stronger that it may use its own hardware. Large-scale chip production plans are typically made in advance. Thus, if Apple wanted to order Qualcomm’s modem chips in 2024, it must start the process now.  

Ultimately, it would be the Cupertino tech giant’s decision whether to continue its partnership with Qualcomm. 

Embedded Face ID

Meanwhile, Apple has been granted a patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and this includes an embedded Face ID element for the iPhone 16 Pro just underneath its display. Also, despite the speculations that the technology would be in iPhone 15 this 2023, it seems unlikely to happen this year. 

Patently Apple first spotted the patent application, and according to the application, Apple noted that the new invention will include a display with a front and back surface. Multiple pixel areas will give off light from the surface at the front to reveal an image, and multiple openings will bring the light from the front to the back surface of the display. 

Moreover, Apple’s proposed device includes a camera mounted on one side of the rear surface of the display. This camera is set up to capture an image. A processor is connected to the display and the camera in the device. And to minimize image distortion that the display prompts, the processor is set up to accept the captured image and apply a first digital filter to the captured image’s first part and a second digital filter, different from the first, to the captured image’s second portion. 

Ross Young, a display analyst, said on Twitter that this embedded Face ID feature will likely arrive in 2024 with the iPhone 16. On the other hand, tech analyst Ming-Chi Kuo tweeted that the feature would be restricted to iPhone 16 Pro.

Ever since its inception, Valorant has had a passionate player base that enjoys playing competitive matches in a ranked setting. Generally speaking, most of the player base chooses to play ranked when playing Valorant, but entering ranked with your friends can be a confusing ordeal. That’s because not every rank can play with each other, and there are numerous intricacies, such as RR penalties and restrictions, that can potentially apply.

Which ranks can play together in Valorant

The state of ranked

For anyone who is new to the ranked ladder, there are nine tiers of ranks, from Iron to Radiant, that make up the current Valorant ranking scheme. Ranks ranging from Iron to Immortal consist of three tiers, with tier three being the highest you can reach before you’re promoted to the next rank. These ranks are followed by Radiant, which consists of the top 500 players in a region.

Properly understanding the ranked structure is crucial in order to comprehend how the ranked system works and which players you can play with.

Ranked restrictions

If you’re just starting to play ranked for the first time and you don’t have a visible rank yet, you can play in small groups of up to three players with no restrictions. Once you’ve obtained a rank, there are certain restrictions that apply to low elo accounts, which are based on the player who has the highest rank in the group.

Iron-silver restrictions

The restrictions are created to keep the matchmaking fair and balanced and they’re based on the person who has the highest rank in your party.

Given that a lot of the player base is ranked among the lowest ranks on the ladder, Riot decided to make the low elo restrictions very light. Iron I players can play with anyone who is ranked up to Silver III as long as the Silver player is the highest-ranking player in the lobby. That’s because the lowest ranks on the ladder, Iron and Bronze, can play with anyone up to Silver.

Gold + restrictions

As there is more room to gain an advantage by climbing as premades in high elo, restrictions in gold and ranks above that are steeper than those in Iron, Bronze, and Silver.

To put things into perspective, gold players can theoretically play with anyone who is ranked up to Platinum III. The restrictions are even harsher in higher elo where you can play only with someone who is up to one rank above you. Last but not least, Immortal and Radiant players can only play solo or duo matches when it comes to playing in a small group.

Playing unrated matches is a small, often unsatisfying consolation when you cannot play ranked, but it is an option that allows you to play with your friends, regardless of rank. Unrated matches, unlike ranked, won’t progress your rank, gain RR, or provide you with any rewards, which is why competitive players usually stick to other methods of bypassing the ranked restrictions. That being said, this method of gameplay is worth keeping in mind as it’s sometimes the only way you can play with your friends.

Get coached

Coaching is often overlooked as a method of reaching high elo as a lot of players don’t want to put in the necessary work. It’s very easy to get coached nowadays, and there are players who will share their knowledge with you for free. Another popular anime is coming to you very soon. “The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses” (“Megami no Café Terrace” in Japanese) anime has released its promo video today, and revealed more details about its cast, as well as about its theme song. The staff also announced the series’ debut this April 7th. 

Fresh details 

Performing the opening theme song and opening billboard music titled “Unmei Kyōdōtai!” (“Common Destiny”) is NeRiAme, while Miki Satō is performing the credits theme song and closing billboard music titled “Dramatic.” 

Furthermore, Kazue Ikura as Sachiko Kasukabe has been added to the coast. 

“The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses” stars Masaaki Mizunaka as Hayato Kasubake, Azumi Waki as Shiragiku Ono, Aya Yamane as Riho Tsukishima, Sayumi Suzushiro as Ami Tsuruga, Asami Seto as Akane Hōōji, and Ruriko Aoki as Ōka Makuzawa.

Production team

The production team behind “The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses” is, of course, also talented. Some of them have already teamed up together in the past for “The Quintessential Quintuplets.” Satoshi Kuwabara will serve as the director of the anime at Tezuka Productions. Kuwabara has also worked with “Black Jack” and “The Quintessential Quintuplets.” Meanwhile, Keiichirō Ōchi is taking charge of the series scripts. Ōchi previously worked with “The Demon Girl Next Door” and “The Quintessential Quintuplets.”

Designing the characters is Masatsune Noguchi, who previously worked with “Hakushon Daimaō” and “My Home Hero.” Composing the music are Shu Kanematsu, known for “Castle Town Dandelion” and “My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!”, and Miki Sakurai, known for “The Quintessential Quintuplets” and “My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!”

Plot

“The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses” is set in Miura, Kanagawa, and follows Hayato Kasukabe, an orphan who moved to Tokyo to study high school. After passing the University of Tokyo exams, he returns to Miura following the death of his grandmother, where he decides to close his grandma’s struggling café, Familia Café Terrace. There, he discovers that five women have been working in the coffee shop, and after seeing their struggles and learning of their bond with his deceased grandmother, he decides to re-open the café.

The anime is based on a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Kōji Seo. It started serialization in Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine last February 2021 and has been compiled into nine volumes as of February 2023. Kodansha USA Publishing is releasing this manga in English.

Two reliable leakers revealed “Fortnite” will be crossing over with the “Attack on Titan” anime in Chapter 4 Season 2, whose release is on the way. The leakers have also claimed that Eren Yeager will be the secret skin players can unlock via the Battle Pass. More details are on this Twitter post.

This is not the first time “Fortnite” collaborated with animes. Previously, they had tie-ups with “Dragon Ball,” “My Hero Academia” (which we reported here on PVP Live), and “Naruto.” Then, the game collaborated with Marvel, bringing Sam Wilson’s Captain America and Briestar to the popular battle royale game. 

Now, it seems that anime fans will get their turn once more. Aside from Yeager, fans can also expect the other main characters of the anime, such as Armin, Mikasa, and Levi, would be available to claim. 

The leak came from “Fortnite” leakers Hypex and Shiina, who are credible in this regard. Fans will likely get more information and official details from “Fortnite” about the crossover soon. 

Reports also said that aside from the Eren Yeager skin being added to the Battle Pass, “Fortnite” is said to be bringing in a new Mythic item identified with the trending anime series. Netflix is making history with its upcoming “Pokémon” spin-off stop-motion series titled “Pokémon Concierge,” which the renowned streaming platform unveiled during the 2023 Pokémon Presents, also a day of celebration for Pokémon’s 27th anniversary. Now, the first-look trailer for “Pokémon Concierge” has been released. 

“Pokémon Concierge” is also Netflix’s first collaborative production with The Pokémon Company and an ambitious stop-motion project produced by critically acclaimed Dwarf Studios. Dwarf Studios specializes in stop animation, such as “Pokémon Concierge.” It is also the same studio that recently worked with the streaming platform on “Rilakkuma and Kaoru,” which received rave reviews and high ratings on IMDb and Google Reviews. 

What it is all about

Expanding the world of Pokémon, the story of “Pokémon Concierge” follows Haru, not Ash this time, a concierge at Pokémon Resort, and her interactions with Pokémons and their owners who visit the resort as guests.

The first-look trailer is simple. It runs for only 25 seconds and shows Psyduck waddling on the beach sands, with the camera right on top of him.

This teaser’s calm nature makes it seem like Haru’s concerns with Pokémon will not be of the fighting type that viewers usually see with the creatures. This hearkens back to something we have never seen yet from Pokémon before, which is a refreshing take and a breath of fresh air. 

Ground-breaking

Minyoung Kim, Netflix’s Vice President of Asia Content, said in the official news release, “Netflix is looking forward to delighting fans in Japan and around the world with ‘Pokémon Concierge,’ an entirely new visual and storytelling experience featuring ground-breaking stop-motion animation set in the Pokémon world in close collaboration with The Pokémon Company.”

The upcoming series will help anime fans move on from Ash Ketchum, whose story arc was completed following his triumph at the Pokémon World Championships.

“We’re also excited to reveal this new series on Pokémon Day and provide fans with even more things to look forward to on this special holiday celebrating the popular franchise,” she added.

Goodbye Ash

Meanwhile, Sarah Natochenny, Ash’s voice actor, admitted she turned emotional at this news. 

“They said the thing [that Ash would depart], and my hand physically just gave out. And I started bawling at this meeting,” she said. “The producers were trying to hold it together for me as well, they kept speaking in a very even tone. You could see a few other actors on the call and the director starting to get emotional as well, just seeing me because we’re very close, and this is so sad.”

No official details about the release date of “Pokémon Concierge” has been published, except that it is scheduled to launch sometime this year. 

‘One Punch Man’ x ‘Overwatch 2’: New Collab Introduces Kiriko As Terrible Tornado

If you are constantly updated about anime news, you may have probably heard about the latest collaboration between the popular anime “One Punch Man” and the popular game “Overwatch 2.” Well, this is the first big crossover of “Overwatch 2” with the worldwide favorite anime and manga. Everything is happening this March 7th.

Previously announced in February as part of the third season of “Overwatch 2,” with the unveiling of a Saitama-inspired skin for Doomfist, the developer behind the game, Blizzard Entertainment, has this time revealed the second skin coming as part of the tie-up. 

It’s Kiriko, dressed as Terrible Tornado. 

Kiriko’s legendary Terrible Tornado skin will be sold as part of a bundle costing 2,100 Overwatch Coins. Plus, this also includes the Terribly Impressive Victory Post and the Terrible Tornado namecard, as Blizzard Entertainment revealed on Xbox Wire. 

Dion Rogers, the “Overwatch” art director, spoke with the official news website of Xbox, saying that the game’s approach to integrating “One Punch Man” into its world is literal cosplay.

Rogers said, “That’s our approach; that our heroes are basically aware of the anime and are fans too. And they’re cosplaying as the heroes. So when you see Doomfist wearing the Saitama outfit, he’s a fan too.”

Gamers can witness this hot collaboration in-game from March 7th until April 6th. The developer also said it would add multiple skins and a custom loading screen. 

This is not the first time the “Overwatch” franchise collaborated with a big entity outside its realm with regard to external skins. In 2019, Blizzard Entertainment teamed up with The Lego Group to bring a Lego-themed Bastion skin and in-game challenge to the original “Overwatch.” 

The third “Overwatch 2” season kicked off last February 7th and is expected to run until mid-April. The season also has another special event, PachiMarchi, which begins this March 21st. 

“It’s something we’ve been wanting to do for a while,” Rogers added, referring to the collaboration. “You know, Overwatch’s art style is kind of a marriage of West-meets-East aesthetics and values – there’s a bit of an anime look to Overwatch. So, being fans of anime, we were looking for a partner to collaborate with. And we looked at various studios, and then when One-Punch Man came up, it was surprising how many people on the team knew the anime, they loved it, they watched it. Aaron Keller, our game director totally knows all the characters and things backwards and forwards.”

“So it was pretty surprising. We felt like that’s a great one because the team would be very excited by this idea – because the team knew the anime so well, and they were so excited, it’s at that point that it really felt like the right fit,” he continued. 

“One Punch Man” tells the story of Saitama, its protagonist and a mighty hero who easily defeats monsters or enemies with a single punch. However, because of this overwhelming strength, he becomes bored with his powers and constantly tries to look for more vigorous opponents who match him.

Launched in 2022, “Overwatch 2” is a first-person shooter game that intends a shared environment for player-versus-player modes while introducing persistent cooperative modes.

Whether it be multiple-time Grade 1 victors Bob Olinger, Samcro, or Yorkhill, the Cheltenham Festival’s Turners Novices’ Chase has had its fair share of reputable winners since its inception in 2011.

This year’s two-mile and four-furlong affair is shaping up to be similar, with a strong field of entries unveiled that include many horses who have succeeded at the Grade 1 level. With that in mind, read on as we take a look at the favorites and their respective form in the lead-up to the Turners Novices’ Chase taking place on March 16th.

Mighty Potter

Currently the highest-rated novice chaser at Timeform, many fans and pundits believe that this race will be Mighty Potter’s to lose.

After reigning supreme in the Beginners Chase at Down Royal by three and a half lengths from Mars Harper and Largy Debut – the promising six-year-old showed his class yet again a month later to defeat the well-respected Gaillard Du Mesnil by more than fourth lengths at Fairyhouse.

Mighty Potter’s trainer Gordon Elliott will be quietly confident heading into the fixture – having won the Cheltenham renewal on two previous occasions with the aforementioned Samcro in 2020 and Shattered Love in 2018.

While the French-bred horse has looked tough to beat in his recent outing – given the deep field expected – he will need to have a flawless run if he is to maintain his unbeaten record as a chaser. For those interested in placing a Bet on Cheltenham with Paddy Power, Mighty Potter is the favorite at 3/1.

Appreciate It

The joint-favorite alongside Mighty Potter with some bookies, nine-year-old Appreciate It has too kicked off his season with two emphatic wins at Punchestown and Naas. His run at Naas in particular showed how dangerous the gelding can be when ridden well and with room to move, dominating the field to reign supreme by 21 lengths.

He could be one of the most interesting contenders if trainer Willie Mullins ultimately decides to step him up to this intermediate trip – and given the promise he has displayed since transitioning to fences – he could give Elliott’s Mighty Potter some problems down the stretch. As mentioned earlier, he currently sits as the joint favorite with some betting providers, however, he is the second favorite with the majority at 4/1.

James Du Berlais

Appreciate It’s stablemate James Du Berlais is another hopeful for Mullins and looked promising in his only run this season at Fairyhouse on New Year’s Day. The seven-year-old would ultimately go on to win that fixture in Ireland by 15 lengths – and in doing so – established himself as a chaser to watch heading into the Cheltenham Festival.

There is plenty of anticipation surrounding this French horse – largely in part to his success as a juvenile hurdler – and if he can put forth a strong challenge and even win the Turner Novices’ Chase in what would be just his second outing over fences, Mullins may have one of the brightest chase prospects in jumps racing.
