The Ghost Recon franchise is making a comeback, albeit in an unusual fashion. Ghost Recon Frontline, the next chapter in the Ghost Recon franchise, is effectively a Ghost Recon-flavored battle royale, though Ubisoft appears to be avoiding that particular word. Regardless, it appears that many fans are dissatisfied with this fresh take on the Ghost Recon brand, as the announcement trailer has been swamped with negative comments.
At the time of writing, the Ghost Recon Frontline reveal video had 4,000 dislikes to 972 likes, and the disparity is sure to grow. People are protesting about Ghost Recon Frontline, claiming that it is a battle royale game rather than a more conventional Ghost Recon experience, and criticizing Ubisoft for how it has managed the Tom Clancy license in recent years.
It doesn’t help that the most recent Ghost Recon game was also poorly regarded, so fans have been desperate for a high-quality entry in the series. Ghost Recon Wildlands had a devoted following, while Ghost Recon Breakpoint received mixed reviews from critics and fans alike, with many criticizing its approach to open-world architecture. Ghost Recon Breakpoint’s bad response may have also contributed to the game failing to reach Ubisoft’s sales projections.
Many fans appear to be dissatisfied with Ubisoft’s decision to transform most of its Tom Clancy-based brands into live service games, such as the unsuccessful Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad, which shut down after barely a year.
Many of the Ghost Recon Frontline dislikes stem from a disdain for live service games, however, it’s uncertain whether Ubisoft will ever abandon its present intentions to offer gaming experiences more in line with its earlier titles.
Not only do many fans want Ghost Recon to return to its roots, but they’ve also been clamoring for a new Splinter Cell game for years. Despite the fact that the previous main series Splinter Cell game was launched over a decade ago, a new Splinter Cell game has yet to be released.
Ghost Recon Frontline might always recover from this early criticism if the game turns out to be excellent, but it appears that many have already written it off without ever playing it. Ghost Recon Frontline testing will begin later this month, so we won’t have to wait long to find out if the game is worth a look.
