Admittedly, Macs and gaming really do not go quite well together. However, some developers stepped up and released a handful of titles on these small silvery laptops. Over the last few years, nevertheless, gaming on Mac has evolved, and a few AAA titles were also released on this platform. We bet you were surprised.
Though directly installing the games on macOS is a bit of a headache, Steam can be your best ally in running games on Mac. Several Mac games are readily available on Steam, but we took our time and compiled a list of 15 of the best action, strategy, real-time tactics, and adventure games on Mac.
So without much ado, here are the best Mac games on Steam that are worth your time and money.
1. ‘Rise Of The Tomb Raider’
“Rise of the Tomb Raider” is a 2015 action-adventure video game that Crystal Dynamics developed, and Microsoft Studios and Square Enix’s European subsidiary published.
This game is the 11th main entry in the “Tomb Raider” series, the sequel to the 2013 “Tomb Raider,” and is the second installment in the “Survivor” trilogy.
Its story follows Lara Croft as she ventures into Siberia in search of the legendary city of Kitezh while combatting the paramilitary organization Trinity, which intends to uncover the city’s promise of immortality.
Lara must traverse this environment, and battle with enemies with firearms and stealth as she explores semi-open hubs. In these hubs, she can raid challenge tombs to unlock new rewards, complete side missions, and scavenge for resources that can be utilized to craft useful materials.
2. ‘Life Is Strange 2’
“Life is Strange 2” is your episodic graphic adventure game that Dontnod Entertainment developed and the European subsidiary of Square Enix published. It has five episodes released between September 2018 and December 2019 for PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, and later for Linux and macOS.
The main sequel in the “Life is Strange” series, the game’s plot features Hispanic American brothers Sean and Daniel as they travel along the United States West Coast as fugitives from the police after the younger brother discovers his telekinetic abilities.
In this game, played from a third-person perspective, Sean must arrive at crucial decisions that will take him to different branches in the plot while serving as a surrogate parent for Daniel. Quite interesting, right?
3. ‘Divinity: Original Sin II’
With “Divinity: Original Sin II,” the game is set in the fictional world of Rivellon, centuries after “Divinity: Original Sin.” Living beings in Rivellon have a form of energy called Source, and individuals known as Sourcerers can manipulate Source to cast spells and enhance their combat abilities.
The Seven Gods of Rivellon had given up a portion of their collective Source power and infused it into a person, Lucian, also known as the Divine, who used his powers to hold back the Void. However, Lucian died before the beginning of the game, which weakened the Veil between the Void and Rivellon, and monstrous creatures of the Void, guided by the God King, their dark deity, have started to invade Rivellon. These Voidwoken are drawn to the use of Source, so an organization called the Divine Order is persecuting Sourcerers. It is an exciting game to play.
4. ‘EVERSPACE’
Published by Rockfish Games, “Everspace” refers to the space combat game wherein the players progress through a number of sectors with increasing difficulty.
In this game, weird as it may sound, the player is expected to die. With each death, they can spend earned credits toward Perks, which, in turn, facilitate their following run.
Also, the player can find weapons and add-ons that may be used during the current run. The player is also given the capability to craft and upgrade various systems of their ship, including weapons, shielding, and more.
An overarching plot is revealed as the player reaches specific points in a run for the first time. The player can also meet NPCs which give different objectives in order to accomplish current or future runs and will reward the player once tasks are completed.
5. ‘DiRT Rally’
“DiRT Rally” is considered the most authentic and thrilling rally game ever made, road-tested more than 80 million miles by the DiRT community. It perfectly captures that white knuckle feeling of racing on the edge as the players hurtle along dangerous roads, knowing that one crash could irreparably harm their stage time.
6. ‘Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI’
On the other hand, “Sid Meier’s Civilization VI” is a turn-based strategy 4X video game Firaxis Games developed and 2K Games published. Take-Two Interactive distributes it.
Similar to previous installments, the goal for the player is to develop a civilization from an early settlement through many in-game millennia. They also will have to become a world power and achieve one of several victory conditions. These include military domination, technological superiority, or cultural influence over the other human and computer-controlled opponents.
Players do this by exploring the world, founding new cities, constructing city enhancements, deploying military troops to attack and defend from others, researching new technologies and civics advancements, developing an influential culture, and engaging in trade and negotiations with other world leaders. It is a game that will surely bring you to the edge of your gaming seats.
7. ‘Hitman’
Meanwhile, “Hitman” is a stealth video game franchise Danish developer IO Interactive developed, and Square Enix and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment published.
The series began with 2000’s “Hitman: Codename 47” and has featured eight main games in total, the most recent being “Hitman 3,” released in January 2021. Main games in the “Hitman” series are set in semi-open world environments and played from the third-person perspective, though some games also have an option for first-person. The gameplay revolves around assassinating various targets.
Gamers can use various skills and tools to traverse each level undetected, such as making disguises, using suppressed weaponry to eliminate guards, and simply hiding in plain sight.
The series’ main protagonist and playable character is Agent 47, referred to as the eponymous hitman, who works for the fictional International Contract Agency or ICA. Originating as a clone who was genetically engineered to maintain peak human physicality and intelligence, be easy to control, and display a cold and monotone personality, Agent 47 is regarded as the best assassin in various story arcs that span multiple games in the series, and each entry so far has been related, even if loosely, to previous ones, creating a sense of continuity. Most of the plots revolve around Agent 47 gradually unraveling and subsequently stopping a major conspiracy while also developing his mysterious background, humane side, and relationships with various recurring characters.
