Today, more and more people are discovering the immense capabilities, power, and magic of artificial intelligence (AI). Especially with the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT last year, many other technology companies are scrambling to compete and maybe even beat this AI tool. ChatGPT is capable of answering questions from users, assisting them with tasks, and even coding, among many others.
Cisco Systems, Inc. is one of the latest companies to participate in the AI race – but not conventionally or traditionally. Instead of introducing new AI software, Cisco is launching its very own new AI networking chips. Keep on reading for the details of this news.
This week, Cisco unveiled its new AI networking chips designed to compete with those from Marvell and Broadcom. Marvel is a company that offers a broad and innovative portfolio of data infrastructure semiconductor solutions that encompass computing, networking, security, and storage.
Meanwhile, Broadcom is a multinational designer, developer, manufacturer, and worldwide supplier of semiconductor and infrastructure software products.
“… Just three and a half years after launching Cisco Silicon One, we’re proud to announce our fourth-generation set of devices, the Cisco Silicon One G200 and Cisco Silicon One G202, which we are sampling to customers now,” stated Rakesh Chopra, a Cisco Fellow in the company’s Common Hardware Group Architecture and Platforming.
These new chips are part of Cisco’s Silicon One series. They are being tested by five of the six major cloud providers, which include Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft Azure.
First, the Cisco Silicon One G200 chip provides the benefits of the company’s unified architecture. It mainly centers on improved Ethernet-based artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML), as well as web-scale spine deployments.
It is also a 5 nm, 51.2 Tbps, 512 x 112 Gbps serializer-deserializer (SerDes) device. Plus, it is a device that is uniquely programmable, deterministic, and has low latency, as well as advanced visibility and control, making this the perfect choice for web-scale networks.
On the other hand, the Cisco Silicon One G202 is ideal for those who still wish to use the 50G SerDes for linking optics to the switch. It is a 5 nm, 25.6 Tbps, 512 x 56 Gbps SerDes.
These new chips are regarded as the most powerful networking chips in the market. They are capable of connecting up to 32,000 GPUs altogether, speeding up tasks.
These chips can also help companies build and deploy AI applications faster and more efficiently. And since they are powerful and energy-efficient, they can help companies save on energy bills. Plus, they also help reduce the number of switches required in a network, thereby improving performance.
Cisco is a market leader in providing its clients with enterprise switches and routers. It also designs networking chips for companies that need more control over their networks.
