The “Harry Potter” fans are excited. The famous novel’s game adaptation, “Hogwarts Legacy,” is launching today, February 10th.

“Hogwarts Legacy,” a major video game adaptation of the “Harry Potter” series created by J. K. Rowling, has arrived, but controversies and fierce online debate surround its launch.

An open-world adventure gaming title like this has been at the top of “Harry Potter” fans’ wish lists for quite some time. The long wait is over.

However, some groups are calling for a boycott because of the author’s public comments on issues about transgenders in the past.

Anti-LGBT comment

Rowling, the creator of the Wizarding World, spent many years in the past fighting transgender people’s legal and societal acceptance, becoming a significant voice that speaks about anti-trans fear and influencing global politics with language that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender or LGBT media deemed “inaccurate and nasty” in 2020.

In June 2020, the author retweeted an article that instead termed “women” as “people who menstruate.”

She tweeted, “People who menstruate.’ I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?”

Despite the immediate outcry from the public, Rowling stayed firm in her stance. However, she did respond to some claims about the damaging nature of her thoughts with a tweet that read, “I respect every trans person’s right to live any way that feels authentic and comfortable to them. I’d march with you if you were discriminated against on the basis of being trans. At the same time, my life has been shaped by being female. I do not believe it’s hateful to say so.”

The “Harry Potter” film adaptation actors Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Ruper Grint have all spoken out against the author’s beliefs.

It has become a reason why some groups are calling for a boycott.

Boycott

Several media outlets have not yet published their reviews about “Hogwarts Legacy.” The consensus is that some major publications altogether avoid reviewing the game, while others have condemned Rowling’s remarks, showing support for the transgender community.

Streamers are also in the same position as they feel the mere dropping of the game’s name may cause some of their followers to unfollow. Call it “cancel culture.”

Biggest-selling premium release of 2023

However, despite the controversy, it is said that “Hogwarts Legacy” is bound to be the biggest-selling premium release of 2023.

The game has already achieved records for the number of people watching streamers that present preview copies. At one point, it was reported that 1.3 million people were watching content related to “Hogwarts Legacy” on Twitch.

Some are not boycotting the game, arguing that choosing to play “Hogwarts Legacy” does not translate to supporting Rowling’s statements.

“Hogwarts Legacy” will allow players to attend Hogwarts, the school in the novel, but in a setting before the time of Harry, Hermione, and Ron, back in the 19th century.

Players can zoom around on a broomstick, learn to call magical spells, explore the Hogwarts castle, fight gigantic spiders, collect hats and scarves to wear, and so much more.

“Are you ready for Hogwarts Legacy?” the Wizarding World official website said. “Hogwarts Legacy comes to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC this Friday! Merlin’s beard, we’re excited. Are you ready to explore Hogwarts, like never before?”
