Google is introducing a new capability to its Gmail app, allowing it to surface email searches better. According to the search giant, it will use machine learning models for this, so search results will provide the most relevant emails instead of the most recent ones. Specifically, they will be shown in the app’s new “Top Results” section.

“When searching in Gmail, machine learning models will use the search term, most recent emails and other relevant factors to show you the results that best match your search query,” Google wrote in its Workspace blog. “These results will now appear at the top of the list in a dedicated section, followed by all results sorted by recency.”

New Gmail for mobile

The improvement will come to the mobile apps of Gmail, but it is yet to be announced when or if it will ever come to the email service’s web version. According to the company, it will be available to all Google Workspace customers and users with personal Google Accounts. Unfortunately, while the feature is now on rollout, Google noted that it might take 15 days to become visible in the mobile apps.

The news is just part of Google’s several works involving the integration of AI into its services and products. In the past, the company also announced testing generative AI in Gmail and Docs. This announcement was followed by more AI-centered projects revealed during the company’s I/O 2023 conference. And now, Google seems to be gradually releasing them to the public as it continues to outpace its rival, Microsoft, in the AI race.
