Automation should be part of every business. If your business has not yet implemented this, you might be missing a lot. Automation provides a lot of benefits for businesses and IT leaders. Some of these advantages include time savings, increased profits, higher productivity, greater efficiency, error minimization, and so much more.
IBM is one of the companies that believe in the power of automation and artificial intelligence to help developers save time and improve their productivity. This is why it has rebranded its over two decades-old AI system, Watson. The rebranded AI system is called IBM Watson Code Assistant.
IBM Watson Code Assistant
Previewed during IBM’s Think 2023 conference held yesterday, IBM Watson Code Assistant is a new AI and data platform for generative AI and foundation models. It is an innovative solution with the goal of empowering developers, regardless of skill level, to syntactically write the right code with recommendations AI generates.
Powered by the company’s watsonx.ai foundation models, this technology is bound to increase productivity by providing codes based on natural language inputs. Watson Code Assistant will also reduce the complexities of coding through the AI-generated recommendations. More so, organizations can adjust the underlying foundation model and customize it according to their practices and standards. These features will provide its users the confidence and flexibility they need, and maximize the benefits of AI across their team.
“We’re excited about this solution because it will make hybrid cloud code development more accessible to IT professionals and help those experienced with writing automation code to become even more efficient,” IBM said in its official news release.
The first available use case for this technology is content generation for the Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform. The solution will help developers, whether beginners or seasoned professionals, write Ansible Playbooks with recommendations AI generates. If you are an entry-level developer, you can benefit a lot from this. This capability will make it simpler for beginners to learn Ansible. Experts will also see they’ll be able to build playbooks faster than ever before.
Disadvantages
However, it might appear that with this new innovation, IBM is still lagging behind in the fast-growing market. While this may be the case, Futurum Group analyst Daniel Newman, said this is not the case.
“This is what I would call the next wave [in generative AI],” Newman said. “What we’ve seen mostly launched so far has been tools for users, consumers and social and a few productivity apps.”
However, another expert in this field, Gartner analyst Arun Chandrasekaran, said IBM Watson Code Assistant may give rise to problems and issues. One of these is attaining speed to market.
“IBM needs to boost its mindshare in the generative AI space,” Chandrasekaran said. “While IBM research is a significant innovator in AI, IBM needs to accelerate the pace at which it is commercializing its research capabilities.”
Another challenge is competition, according to Newman. Several vendors, specifically cloud giants like Microsoft and Google, are competing to be the major provider of what businesses need with generative AI innovation.
