Bitcoin Taproot Upgrade Strengthens Network Productivity

On November 14, at 04:10 UTC, Bitcoin received a critical network update known as the Taproot Upgrade. This is the network’s first significant upgrade after the Segregated Witness (SegWit). The SegWit update led to the creation and deployment of the Lightning Network in 2018.

Gregory Maxwell, a Bitcoin core member and former Blockstream chief training officer suggested the Taproot upgrade on January 23, 2018. While the SegWit update aimed to address transaction malleability and improve the scalability of the Bitcoin network, the current Taproot upgrade intends to improve transaction efficiency, network privacy and adds improved support for smart contract capabilities.

This upgrade was implemented on June 12, 2021, after achieving 90 percent unanimity among all Bitcoin mining nodes. Hampus Sjöberg, another core Bitcoin developer, declared this consensus. Soon after, Sjöberg launched the Taproot.watch website, which kept the community up to date on the chronology leading up to the upgrade and housed any pertinent information about the change.

All Bitcoin tokens are stored in the form of scripts, which are a few lines of code that determine how the token can be used in the following transaction. The “spending criteria” typically mean delivering a signature as confirmation of token ownership.

There are, however, alternative constraints, such as timelocks or mutilsig. To create complicated smart contracts, several sorts of circumstances can be mixed and matched. Whichever of the conditions is met first determines how the token will be spent.

Prior to the upgrade, the network employed the pay to script hash (P2SH), which implies that just the script’s hash was initially included on the blockchain. The Taproot upgrade added the Merkerlized Abstract Syntax Tree (MAST), which offers a condition that allows the transaction’s sender and recipient to sign off on a transaction in tandem for settlement. Merkle Trees serve as the foundation for this construction. Ralph Merkle, one of the initial investors in public-key cryptography, devised these established complicated data structures that are compact.

The use of these trees in the Bitcoin Network ensures that the many situations under which funds could be spent are hashed individually and incorporated in the tree, resulting in a Merkle root, a single hash for the transaction. This means that only criteria that are met must be revealed to the network, making it more data-efficient than the prior contract interaction, i.e., P2SH.

Johnny Lyu, the CEO of Kucoin, a renowned cryptocurrency exchange, spoke with Bitcoinist about the network’s impact from this upgrade. “I believe the influence on Bitcoin utility and consumers may be portrayed in three different ways,” he stated. And we may have to wait a little longer for its full influence to be revealed.”

The first aspect, according to Lyu, is to create better smart contracts. Despite the fact that the Bitcoin network has previously built smart contracts, it frequently results in less efficient transactions and larger data sizes. As a result, while the price impact of the update may be small in the short term, the long-term benefits of this upgrade are enormous due to considerable increases in network efficiency and security.

The Lightning Network Might Get Boosted

The Taproot upgrade may potentially assist the Lightning Network. The network was launched to address the Bitcoin network’s scalability issue, with the goal of relieving congestion on the Bitcoin network via layer-2 solutions.

Trenchev stated that the upgrade would make the Lightning Network more appealing to developers by providing them with more fertile ground to implement scalable enhancements and layer-2 network solutions.

Through Strike, one of the most popular Lightning Network wallets, the Lightning Network played a major role in El Salvador’s recognition of Bitcoin as legal cash. The number of Lightning network nodes increased from 10,000 to 23,000 in the 90 days between May and July of this year. The network’s current projection is that it will reach 700 million users by 2030.

Lyu, on the other hand, is suspicious of the network because it has yet to gain widespread adoption and is contentious in two ways. He stated:

“First, some people believe that Lightning Network is transforming bitcoin into a global payment network like Visa or Mastercard, which is contrary to bitcoin’s original intent; second, the current processing power of the bitcoin network is capable of handling the existing transaction volume, and Lightning Network is not required.” As a result, I believe it must provide a better answer if it is to be extensively used in the future.”

Furthermore, the Taproot upgrade increases the deployment and efficiency of the Bitcoin network’s smart contract capability. However, it may be unrealistic to assume the same level of smart contract functionality as shown in other smart contract blockchain networks such as Ethereum, Binance Smart Chain (BSC), Solana, and others.

Trenchev stated that, while Taproot is the first step in this direction, there is still a long way to go before this becomes a commonly used application. He stated, ”

“Bitcoin is currently the type of network that is an exceedingly successful one-trick pony – it performs its function exceptionally well.” Ethereum, on the other hand, was designed from the start with numerous use cases in mind, although it takes time to iron out any kinks. These distinctions are precisely why Nexo wants to encourage a multi-chain future; it is what will lead to a scalable, practical, and idea-rich industry.”

However, the objective of smart contracts on the Bitcoin network may not even be to scale decentralized apps (dApps) or other smart contract services. Trenchev made a parallel to Ethereum, stating that more advanced smart contracts on Bitcoin could potentially be detrimental to the network. He stated:

“However, Bitcoin is now capable of deploying smart contracts following the upgrade.” The goal of implementing smart contracts is to improve the efficiency and flexibility of the Bitcoin payment function rather than to support Dapps. As a result, deploying the same size of smart contracts on Bitcoin as on Ethereum may be impossible, and it is also risky for the bitcoin network in terms of network security and speed. It will severely undermine bitcoin’s basic purpose as a digital payment system.”

Regardless of the increasing similarities with Bitcoin smart contract platforms, it is apparent that the Taproot version introduces a slew of useful capabilities that both developers and users will like. Although the price of BTC did not change significantly in the immediate aftermath of the upgrade, it is apparent that the long-term pricing impact of Taproot will be enormous since it boosts network efficiency as a whole, one of the most essential factors of any blockchain network’s utilization.

Recently, Crypto.com and other exchanges have been heavily involved in sports sponsorships. Over the course of its twenty-year run in Los Angeles, Staples Center has witnessed many memorable events. In a tweet on Tuesday night, NBA insider Shams Charania reported that cryptocurrency exchange Crypto.com had negotiated a new naming rights contract, renaming the building Crypto.com Arena.

The venue is most known as the home of the Los Angeles Lakers, but it also hosts professional teams such as the LA Kings and the LA Sparks. The facility is located in the bustling downtown district that is home to LA Live.

According to Charania’s tweet, it is expected to be the largest arena naming rights transaction in the United States to date. The LA Times later corroborated Charania’s post, which Crypto.com and AEG also confirmed. A news statement was also issued.

Charania’s statement is not light, considering FTX paid $135 million for the naming rights to Miami’s former American Airlines Arena earlier this year. In addition, just down the road in Los Angeles, the naming rights deal for SoFi Stadium was agreed to for $500 million over a 20-year period. The impending Intuit Dome, which will be the future home of the Los Angeles Clippers, will cost $600 million over a 23-year period.

The arrangement with Crypto.com is a record-breaking $700 million over a 20-year period. Talk about a crypto gamble. According to Axios’ Dan Primack, building owner AEG repurchased the naming rights from Staples, and Crypto.com held discussions with AEG earlier this year.

High School DxD is an anime that has been around since 2012, but its light novel and manga franchise have been around far longer than that. Recently, news has been circulating that the anime would be picked up for a new season, and countless fans have been crossing their fingers that after years of waiting, they’d finally get a fifth season.

Who Are the Characters You’ll Meet in High School DxD?

Issei Hyoudou

Issei Hyoudou is High School DxD’s main male character. He’s a third-year high school student in Class 3-B studying at Kuoh Academy, an institution crawling with fallen angels and demons. Due to his perverted nature, Issei is known as one of the school’s three perverts.

He’s Rias Gremory’s Pawn and one of the members of the Occult Research Club. By the end of the Evil Dragon War, Issei gets promoted to a higher rank, namely the High-Class Devil. This promotion means he’s one step closer to his goal, which is to become a “Harem King.”

Rias Gremory

At Zuoh Academy, Rias is known as the Crimson-Haired Ruin Princess. Not only that, but she’s also one of the prettiest girls in the entire student body and is one of Issei’s fiancées.

Akeno Himejima

Akeno is a first-year college student at Kuoh Academy, and also one of Issei’s fiancées. Akeno is renowned across the school, as she’s the daughter of a Fallen Angel Cadre known as Baraqiel. Other than that, She’s the best friend and Queen of Rias Gremory, and both of them are the Two Great Ladies of Kuoh Academy.

Kuroka Toujou

Kuroka Toujou, initially known as just ‘Kuroka,’ is a Nekoshou. A Nekoshou is a rare version of the Nekomata species of Youkai within the High School DxD universe. She’s the older sister of Koneko Toujou—whom we’ll introduce below—and she was once an SS-Class Stray Devil. In fact, she was considered to be one of the most wanted criminals because it was discovered that she killed her master.

However, later on, it was revealed that she only did what she had to do in order to protect her sister. Kuroka is also one of Issei’s many fiancées.

Koneko Toujou

Koneko Toujou, otherwise known as Shirone Toujou, is the younger sister of Kuroka. She’s a second-year high school student at Kuoh Academy, and also one of Issei’s fiancées. Just like her sister, Koneko is also a Nekoshou.

Asia Argento

Asia Argento is one of the main female protagonists of the franchise. A third-year high school student at Kuoh Academy, she’s a Reincarnated Devil who can’t seem to shake off her prior faith in God. She possesses a rare Sacred Gear known as the Twilight Healing, and with this, she’s able to heal the wounds of just about anyone—humans, devils, angels, and fallen angels alike.

She used to be one of Rias’ Bishops, however, she’s now the first Bishop of Issei and also one of his fiancées.

Gasper Vladi

Gasper is one of the male main characters of the anime, and what’s interesting about him is that he’s a cross-dressing Dhampir (a half-human, half-Vampire species). Gasper was reincarnated into a Devil by Rias, and functions as her first Bishop. He also has the power to stop time, but he struggles in controlling his abilities. As a result, Rias sealed him in the Academy for quite some time.

Before the ‘isekai’ genre appeared and dominated the anime world, the harem genre was all the rage, giving anime fans a plethora of options when choosing their favorite anime ‘waifu.’ One example of an incredibly popular harem series is High School DxD, which was adapted from a light novel and manga franchise. If fan service is your cup of tea, then High School DxD will feel just like heaven—especially since the entire series is chockful of beautiful demons and angels.

So far, High School DxD has four seasons ready for viewing, but there’s barely any information about whether there’s going to be a fifth season. Due to the length of time that has passed since the fourth season’s release, some fans have begun to lose hope.

However, there’s still a lot of unused plot points from the light novels that could be used for a new season. So in this article, we’ll discuss the possibility of a High School DxD Season 5 and what we can potentially expect to see.

What’s High School DxD All About?

In High School DxD, we follow a seemingly regular high-school student named Issei Hyodo. However, we soon learn that he has an incredibly perverted personality. Unbeknownst to him, Kuoh Academy—a former all-girls school—is dominated by supernatural creatures. In this academy, both fallen angels and demons intermingle, although Issei was one of the very few humans in the area.

However, one day, Yuma Amano asks Issei on a date, and it was during that time that she reveals to him that she’s a fallen angel. In a sudden turn of events, Yuma kills him and later revives him using a Rias, a summoning card devil.

The next day, Issei wakes up in his room as if nothing happened… except, Rias is in his room with him. She reveals that since she revived him, he has also turned into one of the devils. As a result, Issei is indebted to Rias, one of the most attractive girls in Kuoh Academy. Amidst the various factions causing friction within the school, Issei must now try and fight back to survive.

High School DxD started off as a Japanese light novel series by Ichiei Ishibumi and Miyama-Zero, the latter being the illustrator. During the series’ decade-long publication, it was able to release more than 20 volumes. By 2011, a manga adaptation was serialized, and it continued to run until 2014. The manga franchise got popular enough that it even had spinoffs of its own.

The anime adaption of High School DxD premiered in January 2012, and the series ran all the way through 2018, having four seasons overall. The fourth season matched the ending of the light novels, and since then, fans have been waiting patiently for any kind of update implying that a fifth season would be released.

What We Know About a Possible Season 5

While the studio and creators have been silent about all this, here’s what we do know about the possibility of a High School DxD Season 5. As mentioned, the fourth season of the anime was based on the light novel series, specifically from the Heroic Oppai Dragon arc found within Volumes 7 through 12.

Since then, more volumes have been released, containing a lot of plot material for at least one more season. However, despite the show’s popularity and high ratings, there’s still no official news about the anime getting picked up for a new season.

There was one moment in time when Ishibumi suggested that Passione is considering picking up High School DxD for a Season 5. For the uninformed, Passione replaced Studio TNK as High School DxD’s production studio, and they worked on the anime’s fourth season.

That said, they haven’t officially canceled the anime either, which is why the fans are stuck in a limbo of “will they, won’t they?” For now, fans are holding on to the last slivers of hope they have.

Ever since the anime High School DxD first premiered, it has captured the hearts of many anime lovers out there. It can’t be helped—the TV series has everything you could possibly look for: supernatural creatures such as Angels and Demonds, and the right amount of comedy to keep you coming back for more.

Without a doubt, High School DxD is one of the best supernatural comedies out there if that’s the kind of anime you’re into. No wonder it’s so popular! That being said, High School DxD fans were left with Season 4 in 2018, and have been waiting for a new season since then.

Fortunately, it seems that there’s cause for celebration, as there’s recent rumors that High School DxD Season 5 will be releasing very soon. In this article, we’re going to talk about everything we know about High School DxD Season 5.

What Is High School DxD?

Before it got adapted into an animated series, High School DxD was initially a Japanese light novel series by Ichiei Ishibumi and illustrated by Miyama-Zero. The light novel series began its serialization in September 2008, and it was published in Fujimi Shobo’s Dragon Magazine.

Two years after its serialization, the light novel series was picked up to become a manga series by Hiroji Mishima in the Dragon Magazine. By 2012, it was adapted into an anime series by TNK.

If you’re not familiar with High School DxD, it’s a supernatural action anime series inspired by the Japanese light novels by Ichiei Ishibumi. The series’ main character, Issei Hyoudou, is a high school student who is reincarnated into none other than a Devil due to his date of death. As such, Issei does everything he can to rise above the ranks of the other Devils by joining the Occult Research Club, ultimately planning to become what is known as a “Harem King.”

When Will Season 5 Be Released?

Fans have been waiting for years for a fifth season and it appears that the wait is finally over. According to recent news, High School DxD Season 5 is set to premier in December 2021, although there’s no specific date just yet. Still, the fact that we finally have an estimated date is wonderful news, especially for those fans who have been waiting for literally years.

Albeit the latest season hasn’t been released yet, fans have been hyping it up like there’s no tomorrow, so we can only hope that it will live up to everyone’s expectations.

High School DxD Season 5 Plot

According to reports we’ve read in the past, we assume that the plot of High School DxD Season 5 will pick up where Season 4 ended. Produced by Passione Studio and directed by Yoshifumi Sueda, we believe that this upcoming fifth season will be using the light novels as a source material in order to develop brand-new and interesting storylines that anime-only fans have never seen before.

That said, we assume that the volumes that will be adapted for Season 5 will be volumes 11 and 12. We also expect that in this upcoming season, the Middle-Class Promotion Test will begin.

Cast of Characters

Since there’s barely any news about High School DxD, we don’t know the official cast of characters yet or if there’ll be any new characters. However, we expect that the primary cast from the previous seasons will still be present as they cause mischief and havoc. Issei Hyoudou will most definitely be present, as he’s the series’ main character. Of course, Rias Gremory will also be there, too.

Among other characters we expect to return are Asia Argento, Akeno Himejima, and Koneko Toujou. We’re also fairly certain that Season 5 will be animated by the same studio who did the previous season.

Apparently, ComicBook.com revealed that while Studio TNK worked on the first three seasons of High School DxD, the baton was passed over to Passione by the fourth season. As such, there was a distinct difference in animation style that most of the fans didn’t like. Because of this major change, fans even created a petition requesting that the show return to its original style from season one through three.

However, we highly doubt that the anime series will switch back to Studio TNK, and it’s highly likely that Passione and Sueda will still be responsible for High School DxD Season 5.
