Developer Game Freak has already revealed the two DLCs for Pokemon Sword and Shield. The first, Isle of Armor has already been launched while the second, Crown Tundra is set to release this October. However, rumors are spilling that a third expansion is already in development.
Pokemon Sword and Shield are the first games in the long-running monster capturing franchise to introduce expansions. There have been events in the past games of the franchise where players are able to receive a limited downloadable Pokemon. However, Sword and Shield went farther with its expanded content.
The first DLC – Isle of Armor – was launched last June 17th which gave players a whole extra island to discover along with a hundred new Pokemon that wasn’t previously in the game. The second DLC, Crown Tundra, will be released on October 22 and will again introduce dozens of new features.
Initially, the developers revealed that only two expansions were being launched for Pokemon Sword and Shield. However, rumors suggest that a third expansion may be in development. Speculations spread over the past few weeks after information was leaked about a third Sword and Shield expansion called The Cinder Citadel.
It’s difficult to judge the legitimacy of these leaks since none have been officially announced but a lot of promising details on the expansion have been revealed. The Cinder Citadel is rumored to be a massive Wild Area full of towering ruins and empty castles that players can explore as part of a series of quests to help a Professor dig deeper information about an ancient Pokemon that no expert can confirm that it ever existed.
The Pokemon, Unown, is anticipated to make their long-awaited comeback to the main franchise through the third DLC. It is believed that this Pokemon will be the key to discovering the third DLC’s Legendary Pokemon, which is speculated to be inspired by a Welsh dragon with a Rock/Dragon typing.

The Cinder Citadel is rumored to be launched on February 27, 2021, as part of the annual Pokemon Day and Pokemon’s 25th anniversary however, fans are doubtful of this information. A shady launch of this nature seems a little bit out of character for the developers but looking at it as a celebratory event for Pokemon’s 25th anniversary seems like a believable event.
This is also not the first leak to talk about The Cinder Citadel being a part of the 25th-anniversary celebration of Pokemon since another leak last June also mentioned about the third expansion’s launch date.
There are also tons of Pokemon speculated to receive their Galarian forms in the third DLC and the most noteworthy of which being the Sinnoh Starter Pokemon. It would be amazing to see the Galarian variations of Piplup, Chimchar, and Turtwig. However, the developers have never made Galarian forms of any starter Pokemon.
Other Pokemon speculated to receive Galarian forms include Bisharp, Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, and Hitmontop. It is also speculated that the Sinnoh starters will get their own Gigantamax forms which is much believable because all of Kanto and Galar’s starters have their G-max transformations.
There are so many rumors spreading around about a third expansion which makes it hard to tell which of them are true. However, considering all of the details that have been leaked, it seems like a safe bet to say that Pokemon Sword and Shield is receiving another DLC.
