Snapchat has a vast collection of buttons and symbols for its users to keep track of, including the confusing “X” icon that appears next to some names on the platform. On the surface, it seems like Snapchat is a fairly straightforward app. You can receive photos and videos from your friends, and share your own pictures.

While those features are still the bread and butter of Snapchat, there is already so much more on the app today. There’s the ability to watch public posts from Snapchat friends on the Stories page and watch shows from BuzzFeed, plus so much more.

With so many things happening on Snapchat, it is not a surprise that people often raise questions about what certain buttons or settings in the app do. One is the “X,” which often appears next to Snapchat names. Usually, what appears are the chat and camera icons, but sometimes, they are replaced by an “X.” What does this mean?

The Real Meaning Behind This Weird Icon

Like several other parts of the social media platform, the “X” next to people’s names is not clearly explained. Some names have the chat and camera icons next to them, while others have the “X” icon. While Snapchat is not too vocal about this, we got the answers for you.

If you see an “X” next to a Snapchat name, it only means that the person sent you a friend request, but you have not yet accepted that request. Tapping the name shows two buttons: an “Okay” button that accepts the friend request and a “Report or Block” button that lets you report or block the person, obviously.

On the other hand, tapping the “X” next to the name brings up a few options right from the Chat page, letting you report, block, or clear the conversation from your screen. But that’s all there is to it, really. The “X” next to Snapchat names is not a bug or feature you should be afraid of (thankfully). If you see it, it is just a reminder that you have a pending friend request to deal with.

But can this “X” be removed? Let’s find out next.

How To Remove The ‘X’ Icon On Snapchat

Follow these easy steps to remove the “X” icon on Snapchat.

  1. First, check if they are added to your friends’ list or not. If they are not, add them.
  2. Take a look if you are added to their Snapchat friends’ list. If you are not, you can ask them to do so.
  3. Finally, the grey “X” icon will be removed after you are done with the steps above. However, you may need to relaunch Snapchat again. Yet, this depends from system to system.

In other words, the “X” icon beside the Snapchat conversation will be removed once both of you have added each other to each other’s friends’ list.

Wrapping Up

True enough, Snapchat conversations can reveal a lot more than we usually assume them to do. It is also true that this “X” icon on Snapchat can be surprising or shocking to those who did not envision losing one of their closest friends. Well, look at the bright side. Please take this as a sign, and talk to these people before it is too late.
