History, fantasy, action, and so much Chinese heritage – that’s “Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty.” Several gamers fall in love with this dramatic and action-packed game set in the Later Han Dynasty (which spanned from 25 to 220 AD, a few decades after Christ’s time. Not only is it based on such a glorious part of China’s history, but it also introduces that point in time, dark fantasy style.

Don’t blame yourself if you’re an obsessive-compulsive gamer. If you’re the type of gamer who will spend countless hours studying the game first and reading guides about it, you are not alone. Video games like “Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty” sometimes require you to know more about it before you actually start playing – unless you want to miss the fantastic action. Here are the most important things to know first before starting to play the game.

1. Treat ‘Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty’ As A Linear Soulslike

The game feels a lot like soulslike, but in linear mode. So, unlike other games of this kind, you won’t find a lot of looping and grinding in this Chinese history-inspired game. The story plays out across a series of areas known as Battlefields, which are pretty wide, but your journey through them is linear, most of the time.

A big boss you must fight with is coming at you during the first 20 minutes of the game. Whoa, right? Plus, you’ll find Battle Flags and Marker Flags before every boss fight. Battle Flags are also your starting point when you die, even repeatedly.

2. Navigate Through Your Morale And Fortitude

Wait, navigating through Morale? Yes, you read that right. The game’s Morale system is the measure of the number of bad guys you’ve killed without dying. Sounds ironic, doesn’t it?

A higher Morale means a tougher match. If you kill enough bad guys, your Morale goes up or boosts. When a bad guy kills you, you decrease your Morale, while theirs goes up (yes, the baddies also have Morales), which makes encountering them the next time around more challenging.

To prevent losing too much of that Morale, you must raise of Fortitude or the lower limit to your Morale. Very Chinese-sounding, right?

3. The Weight Of Your Gear And Equipment Is More Important That You’d Expect

Okay, unlike in other video games, classes are non-existent in “Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty.” That means you are free to create your own depending on how you level up and this is determined by the Five Phases Virtues. Still very Chinese. It also depends on your chosen gear.

Gear has a wide array of rarity and upgrades. You must understand them early on, including the gear’s weight. You can select from light, medium, or heavy armor.

4. Make Your Spirit Your Friend

It’s very Jackie Chan to hear that “Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty” follows the concept of Spirits. Both your character and your enemy’s have Spirit Gauges.

When you are hit or dodge, you’ll lose Spirit. No, it doesn’t mean you’ll lose spirit playing, but it’s like losing your chi or mantra. You may also spend your Spirit to cast Wizardry Spells or engage in Martial Arts. Exciting. And, when you land regular melee attacks or when you triumphantly defect attacks, you’ll gain or regain Spirit.

Therefore, managing your Spirit Gauge while working to deplete your enemies’ is the key to succeeding in this game. Pro tip: deflect often.

Those are the most important things you should know before starting the game. This Team Ninja game is playable on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox One and Series X/S.
