PlatinumGames Shares Development Update of Bayonetta 3

More than three years have already passed since The Game Awards 2017, which is when Nintendo first announced Bayonetta 3. Information has been scarce since then, and fans were left to dissect and formulate theories out of the initial teaser trailer.

Now that 2020 is almost ending, there’s still not a lot of information about the upcoming Nintendo Switch-exclusive game, such as details on what interested players can expect once it’s released. On the bright side, PlatinumGames’ Hideki Kamiya recently shared another development update to the fans, reassuring them that everything is well and going smoothly.

Kamiya recently had an interview with Famitsu (via Gematsu), where he confirmed that the studio is still working on Bayonetta 3 and that its development is “going very well.” He’s aware of the fans’ growing concerns about the game due to the fact that there hasn’t been a lot of updates since its initial reveal. However, he guarantees that  “verifications of new systems have been going great.”

Although some understood this sentence to mean that Bayonetta 3 is also being developed for other consoles or gaming systems, Kamiya was most likely just talking about the new gameplay mechanics that will be introduced in the upcoming title.

Since Bayonetta 3’s initial teaser trailer was released, the game remains a mystery to us all even until today, especially since the teaser barely showed anything significant to begin with. For those who haven’t seen it yet, the teaser trailer basically featured a bright moon that slowly got drenched in red, and Bayonetta firing her pistols at some kind of mysterious and ghostly figure.

Interesting enough, Bayonetta’s appearance in this game looks more similar to the first Bayonetta title rather than the sequel that has her rocking short hair. Asides from these tiny details though, there’s not much to gather from the seconds-long trailer.

Bayonetta 3’s release date is up in the air as well, and fans can only speculate. There were rumors in the past that led fans to believe that the game would be launched in 2018. When that year passed by in a blur, fans began expecting it to release in 2019. As excited fans can see, that wasn’t the case either.

When PlatinumGames said that it would reveal big announcements in 2020, fans were crossing their fingers that Bayonetta 3 would be released some time this year. Sadly, there’s only a few days left of 2020 and still no sign of the hack and slash’s third installment.

However, if the game’s development really is going as well and as seamlessly as Kamiya says, then perhaps we can expect the studio to reveal Bayonetta 3’s release date by 2021. In the meantime, Nintendo Switch fans have been given the chance to revisit the series while waiting.

Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2 both received Nintendo Switch ports, and the titular character is also one of the playable characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s expansive roster. These are great ways for fans to pass the time as they wait for PlatinumGames to share more information.

The Nintendo Switch is an incredible hybrid handheld console and we can’t wait to see how the developer utilizes and incorporates its features in Bayonetta 3.
