Canceled Castlevania Game Returns To Apple Arcade

Despite the absence of new releases in recent years, the Castlevania series remains a popular property among gamers. With the release of its fourth season and the announcement of a Richter Belmont-focused spin-off series, the animated series is proving to be a huge hit. Despite the absence of new titles on the horizon, the resurrection of the previously shelved Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls breathes new life into the brand.

Konami revealed this game as a new addition in the series for mobile devices back in 2018. The initial plan was for Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls to be released for iOS devices, with the promise of multiplayer action and classic Castlevania gameplay.

This also promised a variety of playable characters throughout the franchise’s history, ranging from the legendary Simon Belmont and Alucard to the lesser-known Soma Cruz and Shanoa. In 2019, the game was soft-launched in Canada before being quietly shut down the following year.

The fandom appreciated this Castlevania entry for those who were able to play it for a short time. It received a lot of praise for its devotion to the series’ aesthetics and musical library, which came from multiple distinct games.

It was panned, though, because to its excessive dependency on in-game microtransactions. That functionality will be deleted with the game’s resurrection as an exclusive on the Apple Arcade, as the Apple Arcade does not allow any games with advertisements or in-game microtransactions on its platform. Konami’s current estimated release date for this game is “soon.”

The narrative of this game focuses around Alucard, who takes on the character of Genya Arikado, being charged with fighting creatures that appear throughout the game’s numerous grimoires. This allows him to interact with other playable characters such as Simon Belmont, Charlotte, and Shanoa, with more planned in the future.

On debut, there are at least 60 playable levels, as well as extra features such as an ongoing plot involving characters from across the Castlevania chronology and objectives similar to those seen in comparable games.

While this may not be the next installment in the series that fans had hoped for, it demonstrates that Konami recognizes the Castlevania franchise’s enduring popularity. The only other anticipated game news was the supposed remasters of the Castlevania GBA trilogy, which is where some of the characters in this game come from. With a brand-new multiplayer crossover experience, this game may provide fans with a glimpse into these lesser-known characters from the series’ history.
