According to Valve CEO Gabe Newell’s latest tease, the well-known wireless marketplace Steam may be coming to consoles very soon. It’s unclear what form this version of Steam on consoles would take, but it seems that something is in the works, which may be promising for console gamers who have wished for more Valve support in recent years.
Following the success of Half-Life: Alyx, one of Valve’s first major single-player releases since Portal 2, the studio is gearing up for a renaissance within its own studio. Valve also announced that more games would be released as a result, which is a big deal because the studio has been mostly focusing on promoting its multiplayer games like Dota 2 while delaying massive new updates that many fans have been asking for.
With Valve heavily teasing Half-Life 3, it seems that fans might eventually get what they’ve been waiting for; and it may not only be on PC. Valve CEO Gabe Newell pointed at the possibility of Steam coming to consoles during the next year during a public panel (via Reddit user Odysseic). He merely teased when asked if the famous storefront will be coming to consoles. “By the end of this year, you’ll have a great idea,” Newell predicted.
It’s difficult to predict how this will play out, but fans have hoped that Half-Life: Alyx will be released on PS5 with Sony’s latest PSVR headset. This would likely be part of this hypothetical new iteration of Steam, but it may also be a way for players to download PC games to their console through the cloud. This may also indicate that Newell is hinting that Half-Life 3 and perhaps other games like Portal 3 will be released on consoles in addition to PC. Any of these franchises have previously existed on consoles.

When it comes to announcing Valve’s latest Steam ventures, The Game Awards seems like a good place to go. Geoff Keighley has a long experience with Valve and Half-Life: Alyx was supposed to debut there prior to a major spill.
It’s also likely that Valve will use the E3 conference hosted by Xbox to make an announcement. Regardless, Steam is a significant medium that has aided games like Titanfall 2 in attracting large audiences through Steam purchases and other means. Bringing all of Valve’s games to consoles will be a huge step forward for the industry.
