According to a new teaser, Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality will be released on October 14th. Maze Theory created this Doctor Who-inspired game as a follow-up to their 2019 virtual reality release Doctor Who: The Edge of Time.
The idea for a sequel to The Edge of Time came from a financial report on a Maze Theory investment by Calculus Capital, a British fund manager. According to the article, Maze Theory intends to create and release a new Doctor Who experience for consoles, most likely the PS5 and Xbox Series X. The release of this new teaser has now confirmed that report.
With so much legend from a property that is more than 50 years old, it’s no wonder that the television series has inspired numerous video games. Despite its popularity in other areas like movies and merchandising, the Doctor Who brand has yet to score a smash in the field of video games.
Tiny Rebel Games, a video game publisher, produced the mobile puzzle RPGs Doctor Who: Legacy and Doctor Who Infinity. Despite essentially good reviews, the games failed to create an impression. Even worse was 2010’s Doctor Who: Return To Earth, which was possibly the franchise’s weakest video game incarnation. Nonetheless, the dream of a successful video game may be coming true.
Maze Theory has released another official trailer for Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality, which will be released on October 14th. Like the previous one, the latest teaser depicts common Doctor Who foes that the player will definitely encounter: Cybermen, Daleks, and Weeping Angels. However, unlike the original teaser, Maze Theory’s latest video features first-person gameplay, as seen by a lone arm clutching objects like the Doctor’s famed sonic screwdriver.
Maze Theory’s Doctor Who: The Edge of Time appeased fans by allowing them to enter the TARDIS. Unfortunately, this fan service did nothing to change the minds of critics about the VR game. The structure of Doctor Who: The Edge of Time (and the Doctor Who franchise’s ambition to produce top-tier video games) may be part of the problem.
VR video games are still not widely available. In addition, puzzle RPGs can only go so far in terms of plot and gameplay. Maze Theory’s latest game finally gives the brand a chance to flourish in a more traditional style. Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality, unlike its predecessor, is not a VR title. This departure from VR might be the game’s defining feature.
In any case, fans are certain to give the new game a go, especially because David Tennant’s tenth Doctor will accompany Jodie Whittaker’s current Doctor. With the inclusion of the beloved tenth Doctor in the game, Whovians will undoubtedly exclaim, “Allons-y!”
