Bitcoin acceptance is increasing, and as the demand for BTC payments grows, more and more brands are hopping on board. Elektra, a well-known Mexican retail brand owned by billionaire Ricardo Salinas Pliego, is the first to accept bitcoin payments. The retail and banking chain owner turned to Twitter to corroborate the prevailing rumors.
Elektra does accept. Bitcoin Supermarket Network Elektra has confirmed that bitcoin payments are now accepted for all items. This payment option will be available online and at all of the chain’s physical locations. Customers will be able to check out using the bitcoin and cryptocurrency payment service Bitpay, which will process all payments on the chain’s behalf.
Ricardo Salinas Pliego, a billionaire, verified the merger on Twitter, writing, “The allegations are genuine. Elektra is Mexico’s first (retail) store that accepts bitcoin payments. I’m sorry to have defeated the competition yet again.” The retail chain is now the first and only of its sort in Mexico, accepting bitcoin payments for all of its products.
Elektra is one of Latin America’s major retail and banking chains. Its owner, Ricardo Salinas Pliego, Mexico’s third-richest man, is an outspoken bitcoin proponent. The billionaire has repeatedly expressed his support for Bitcoin and pushed people to invest in digital assets. Salinas himself admitted at one time that he had 10% of his wealth in cryptocurrencies.
To promote the new BTC payments, the grocery chain offers a 20% discount to all customers who pay with bitcoin on certain products. The offer will be available during the month of December and will end on December 31st.
Bitcoin’s popularity as a means of payment for products and services has grown in recent years. Not only bitcoin, but crypto payments in general, are on the rise.
Konzum, Croatia’s largest supermarket chain, revealed earlier this month that consumers may now pay for items with bitcoin. Although customers could only pay using the cryptocurrency online at the time, the grocery chain declared that it was striving to make BTC purchases accessible in its real locations.
Litecoin’s price skyrocketed earlier this year as reports spread that retail behemoth Walmart will begin accepting cryptocurrency payments. The chain eventually disputed the claims, but the market reaction indicated that users were ready for the titans to begin accepting crypto payments.
