Diabolik Lovers, otherwise known as Diaborikku Ravāzu, is a Japanese mystery-horror anime series based on an interactive game franchise released for the PSP. After the first game was released in 2012, it was quickly adapted into a manga series. It didn’t end there, though—Diabolik Lovers was then adapted into an animated TV series a year after.
The first season of Diabolik Lovers was fired aired in September 2013, and unsurprisingly, it was a massive hit among the fans of both the game franchise and the manga adaptation. Given its popularity, the show was renewed for a second season, which aired in September 2015. Since the second season’s finale, fans of the franchise have been waiting for any news or updates about season 3.
Given how many years have passed already, and we’re nearing 2022, we’ve compiled everything we know about the highly-awaited third season.
The Plot of Diabolik Lovers
To refresh your memory of what Diabolik Lovers is all about, the show follows six sadistic brothers and one girl sent by her father to live with them. The girl in question, Yui Komori, is a high schooler who, despite her cheerful personality, has begun to feel quite troubled due to her seeing spirits and the like.
By the time she reached her second year of high school, she transfers to a night school due to her father’s line of work. However, that school wasn’t like any other because rumors claimed that vampires were enrolled there, too, living amidst all the human students.

Yui’s father requested that she live with the six Sakamaki brothers in an isolated mansion. However, little did Yui know that these six brothers, namely Shuu, Reiji, Ayato, Kanato, Laito, and Subaru, are all vampires. Upon her arrival, the brothers couldn’t understand why she’d choose to live with them, but shortly after, they decide to make her their “sacrificial bride” and use her to satisfy their carnal needs.
On the other hand, Yui is trying to come to terms with her living conditions, trying to understand why her beloved father would let her live in that strange mansion. To make matters worse, she begins to feel that something unnatural is taking place in that mansion, and she feels uneasy, especially when she begins to experience chest pains.
However, try as she may, Yui is unable to escape the mansion and the brothers who live in it, and so, her new life full of pain, ecstasy, and madness begins.
Meet the Characters
Diabolik Lovers has a long list of recurring characters, so much so that it would take too much time to list everyone. As such, we’ve only listed down the main characters from the series, along with a brief background of who they are. Take note, however, that there may be spoilers ahead, so tread carefully.
Yui Komori
Yui Komori is a seemingly regular human girl and one of the leading characters of the Diabolik Lovers anime. She’s sweet and kind, but her life becomes topsy-turvy when her dad sent her away to live with the Sakamaki brothers. She tries to accept the harrowing circumstances she’s experiencing and remains strong despite it all. However, it’s revealed later on that Yui actually has what is known as ‘Cordelia’s Heart,’ which means she’s more of a dormant vampire and not actually human like she thought.
Shuu Sakamaki
Shuu is the eldest out of all six brothers and is thus considered the master of the Sakamaki household. The Diabolik Lovers animated series reveals that both Shuu and Reiji, his younger brother, are sons of Beatrix, who was the Vampire King’s first wife. Shuu is lazy and apathetic and really doesn’t care about anything else other than music.

Reiji Sakamaki
The second eldest brother is known as Reiji Sakamaki, and unlike Shuu, he’s disciplined and strict. He’s the one who takes care of the mansion while Shuu lounges around. That being said, he doesn’t have a good relationship with Shuu. In fact, he’s jealous of Shuu’s position as the master of the household and hates him for it.
Ayato Sakamaki
Ayato is the third in line and is the oldest among Cordelia’s triplets, the Vampire King’s second wife. Ayato had a very troubled childhood because his mother Cordelia often used him to try and compete with Beatrix for Karlheinz, the Vampire King’s, attention. Because of how he grew up, Ayato is far from kind and has a narcissistic nature.
Kanato Sakamaki
Kanato is Cordelia’s middle child and consequently the fourth oldest son in the entire Sakamaki household. Kanato Sakamaki has an unstable, child-like personality, and he’s typically seen clinging to a teddy bear. He may seem polite on the outside, but he actually has a very abusive and clingy personality when you get to know his true colors.
Laito Sakamaki
Laito is the youngest son in Cordelia’s triplets and is the second youngest Sakamaki brother. However, he’s probably the most sadistic among the bunch, and there have been instances where he was really abusive to those around him. Later on, we find out that Cordelia implemented a very sick way of parenting when it came to Laito, so much so that he eventually grew up viewing her as more of a lover and not a parent.
Subaru Sakamaki
Last but not least, Subaru Sakamaki is the youngest among the six brothers. Neither Beatrix nor Cordelia is his mother, and it’s later revealed that his mother, Christa, was forced by Karlheinz to be his wife. Consequently, he also forced her to bed him, and Subaru was the result of that. As you can imagine, Subaru has had an incredibly traumatic childhood, and he grew up with his mother begging him to kill her, which he could never bear to do.

Will We Ever See a Third Season?
While it’s true that Diabolik Lovers didn’t get high enough ratings, many fans are still holding on to the hope that it would be picked up for a third season. After all, the show’s producers still decided to pick up the anime for a second season even though the first season had somewhat low ratings.
The last Diabolik Lovers show that aired was called Diabolik Lovers: Lost Eden, and it initially aired back in 2017 in Japan. On the bright side, this latest show didn’t wrap up the animated franchise just yet, and even the second season was full of unanswered questions. If the producers do choose to pick up the show for a third season, fans will be relieved to know that there’s still a lot of material they could potentially use.
Since the Diabolik Lovers anime series is a result of the interactive game franchise, it may be safe to say that ratings and viewer counts aren’t of great importance to the show’s creators. It’s highly likely that as long as more games are being released, Diabolik Lovers will also keep going as an animated series.
Conclusion
At this point, fans have to stay positive as much as they can. While there’s no official announcement yet whether Diabolik Lovers will be getting a third season, there’s also no proof that it’s over. So, fans can hope that some kind of announcement or teaser will be revealed before 2021 ends or by 2022.
