Yesterday, the world celebrated International Women’s Day 2023 with the theme “Embrace Equity.” International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements.
“Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that’s diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women’s equality. Collectively we can all #EmbraceEquity,” stated the official website of International Women’s Day. “Celebrate women’s achievement. Raise awareness about discrimination. Take action to drive gender parity. IWD belongs to everyone, everywhere. Inclusion means all IWD action is valid.”
The tech industry did not trail behind with regard to this celebration. Here is how the world of technology celebrated International Women’s Day, with companies like Google and Xiaomi launching their respective campaigns.
Google Doodle
On International Women’s Day, search engine giant Google launched a Google Doodle that paid tribute to women across the globe. Through its interactive doodle, the company highlighted how women support and help each other in their daily lives.
Google said, “Today’s Doodle honors International Women’s Day by celebrating many ways in which women support women. The vignettes within each ‘GOOGLE’ letter highlight just a few of the many areas in which women around the world support each other to progress and improve each other’s quality of life.”
The doodle was seen as a woman addressing people, women protesting for their rights, women’s role in science and medicine, and women who are critical support systems for each other in motherhood.
“Women in positions of influence who advocate for progress across issues central to the lives of women everywhere. Women who come together to explore, learn, and rally for their rights. Women who are primary caregivers to people of all walks of life. Women who are critical support systems for each other in motherhood,” the company added. “In honor of women across the globe who are supporting each other across all aspects of life — Happy International Women’s Day!”
Xiaomi’s ‘Women in Tech’ video story
On the other hand, Chinese technology company Xiaomi also commemorated International Women’s Day 2023 by launching the “Women in Tech” video story. This three-minute clip featured the lives of three key female figures in Xiaomi with the goal of inspiring individuals and celebrating talents who have helped shape the industry.
The women featured in the video included Yi Yan, General Manager of Shanghai Regional Headquarters; Chen Lu, Senior Director of Ecosystem; and Abi Go, Spokesperson and keynote speaker for Xiaomi International.
Xiaomi’s video story imparts a key message for all those aspiring individuals in the field of technology, “to find your passion and to go for it, to have faith in yourself, and to continue striving in becoming the best version of you.”
Xiaomi is a designer and manufacturer of consumer electronics, and related software, home appliances and household items.
WeAreTechWomen on International Women’s Day
WeAreTechWomen – an entity helping thousands of women in tech enhance their careers through events, conferences, and awards – also joined the celebration.
They said in their official statement, “Women’s equality has made positive gains but the world is still unequal. International Women’s Day celebrates the social, political and economic achievements of women while focusing global attention on areas requiring further action.”
