Google is no newbie to the phone game, but it did arrive later than Apple, therefore, losing precious time on consolidating power in the market. However, things might be about to change for the technology giant with the success of their previous two phones the Google Pixel 5 and the Google Pixel 6.
History of Google with phones
It was only in 2016 that Google first released the Pixel as a way of Google using their own software exclusively on a phone. They had already successfully dominated the Play store, but this was a way for an all-rounded Google experience.
Since then, Pixel phones have come and gone with a mediocre response from reviews. However, this was always going to happen with a tech giant trying their hand at something brand new to them determining what they want and what their ethos to proceedings will be.
For example, Google aimed to break into the market with a mid-range phone which was affordable and all-rounded. However, they were struggling to make real inroads in the dominated market from Android competitors such as Sony, Samsung, and Huawei. Then there was the next big opponent, Apple.
The battle with Apple
With Google owning the play store there was always the argument about if app developers wanted their app to be solely on one platform or on both. For example, some of the best new bookmakers had to make that decision and possibly exclude the market. However, over time app developers seem to be going for the dual ability and it is rare to find an exclusive app these days.
But now a phone is on the market that is challenging Apple it is a different ball game altogether. The Pixel 5 really showed the intentions of Google and how even with a cheaper phone on the market they were still able to compete with Apple’s phones. Selling out of their new flagship phone they had asserted themselves against Apple.
Now, Apple is obviously still the biggest and the most dominant; it will be hard to convince many people otherwise that life away from Apple might be easier for them and cheaper in the long run. However, the release of the Google Pixel 6 has really shaken things up.
With more than 7 million Google Pixel 6s reportedly manufactured this is the biggest move from Google to stake its claim in the phone industry. The Pixel 6 has been up against the iPhone 13, which is equally impressive, and across reviews, it has been hard for the reviewers to split them comprehensively.
Nobody would have thought in 2016 with the first Pixel that it would ever be in the same league as the iPhone but now here we are. With the Pixel 7 expected in the fall months and an announcement expected soon about when the iPhone 14 is released, this could be the real battle and have some people questioning what they are paying an extra £200 on.
