Most expensive iPhone ever

Jeff Pu, an analyst from Haitong International Tech Research, projected that the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro Max would debut with a higher initial price than iPhone 14 Pro Max. iPhone 14 Pro Max is currently priced at $1,099 in the United States. 

No specific price details have been revealed. 

Pu’s insights also align with roughly the same information from another analyst, Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities, who shared last month that the average selling prices of next-gen iPhones will increase. However, like the Haitong analyst, Ives did not provide specific price details. 

Moreover, Gordon Kelly, a senior contributor to Forbes, reported that he had sources saying both iPhone 15 Pro models will likely see price increases as Apple continues its wider product strategy of broadening the gap between its Pro and non-Pro units. 

Exclusive features

But Apple surely won’t increase its products’ prices without giving something in return, right? Pu also suggested that the iPhone 15 Pro Max will have exclusive features not present on the iPhone 15 Pro. 

One of these features is a periscope lens designed to improve the phone’s telephone camera abilities and provided extended optical zoom functionality. 

There will also be exclusive boosts on the battery aspect, amidst Apple reportedly making huge strides aiming to enhance its next-generation devices, particularly in their batteries. Rumor has it that the upcoming iPhone 15 series will get a remarkable boost on its battery units, up to 18 percent larger than the phones before them.

South Korean multinational manufacturing conglomerate Samsung has released its earnings estimate for the second quarter of this year, and the figures are not quite good. Here’s the news. 

Sinking profits

Things are getting bleak for Samsung these days, as the company reported significant profit losses due to chip oversupply and slow demand. 

Samsung, which is said to be the biggest memory chip and smartphone maker in the globe, projected its profits from April to June at 600 billion Korean won (KRW), or around $461 million. This is significantly lower than the KRW 14.1 trillion or about $11 billion it reported a year ago. This is also the second consecutive quarter Samsung reported worrying stats. 

This marks the company’s worst quarterly profit in 14 years since the first quarter of 2009 when the South Korean tech giant reported KRW 590 billion, or around $454 million in operating profit. 

As for the sales, they fell around 22 percent to KRW 60 trillion (around $46 billion) from last year’s KRW 77.2 trillion (around $59 billion), according to Samsung’s regulatory filing. 

What’s the cause?

Financial analysts are saying that this poor performance is attributed to the losses from Samsung Device Solutions, the company’s semiconductor division. This division is expected to make losses of up to KRW 4 trillion, or around $3 billion. Customers are not patronizing enough memory chips for their high-performing computers and cloud servers. Samsung also previously admitted this trend would continue. 

Furthermore, the South Korean chipmaker also predicted that the chip market globally is bound to shrink six percent on-year to $563 billion this year, all because of a significant and sharp drop in demand, and also warning that these challenges will continue over the rest of this year.

On a positive note

But on a positive note, analysts are optimistic. One analyst said, “Memory chip inventory levels are expected to peak out in the third quarter. Samsung’s performance will improve faster than the wider industry’s recovery pace, as the impact of inventory write-downs will lessen.”

News outlets also report a surge in demand for memory chips used in artificial intelligence (AI)-powered products and services, such as the popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT. On this aspect, Samsung shares have surged 29 percent this year. 

In addition, Samsung’s smartphone division is appearing to have been performing solidly, nevertheless. For instance, the Samsung Galaxy S23 series, which launched in February of this year, has been selling so well across the globe. In fact, in certain countries, these high-end phones reportedly sold 1.6 to 1.7 times more than their predecessors during the same one-month time frame. What is Threads?

Threads is the newest app from Meta – the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp – and can be accessed via your Instagram account. Threads looks a lot like Twitter, with a feed consisting mainly of text-based posts, but people can also post photos and videos, and converse with each other in real-time. 

“Whether you’re a creator or a casual poster, Threads offers a new, separate space for real-time updates and public conversations,” the company said in its official news about Threads. “Our vision with Threads is to take what Instagram does best and expand that to text, creating a positive and creative space to express your ideas.”

According to Meta, messages posted to Threads will have a limit of 500 characters. Moreover, just like on Twitter, netizens can reply to, repost, or quote others’ posts. Since Threads can be accessed from Instagram, users can also share posts from Threads to their Instagram Stories. Verified Instagram accounts are automatically verified on Threads. 

“Feels like the beginning of something special, but we’ve got a lot of work ahead to build the app,” Zuckerberg wrote on his official account on Threads. “It’ll take some time, but I think there should be a public conversations app with 1 billion+ people on it. Twitter has had the opportunity to do this but hasn’t nailed it. Hopefully we will.”

Just a few hours after Threads’ launch, it has amassed more than 30 million downloads, according to the Live Mint website. 

Not just this, but influential celebrities and news media outlets are immediately signed up on Threads, including Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Hugh Jackman, Oprah Winfrey, The Washington Post, and The Economist.

Twitter threatens to sue Meta over it

Threads is clearly competing with Twitter, and Musk is fast to act. Just hours after Threads launched, Twitter threatened to file a lawsuit against Meta. 

Musk also released a series of posts on Twitter, including that which says, “Competition is fine, cheating is not.”

According to a letter to Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, Musk’s lawyer Alex Spiro accused the company of “unlawful misappropriation of Twitter’s trade secrets and other intellectual property.”

The letter also accused Meta of hiring several former employees of Twitter who “had and continue to have access to Twitter’s trade secrets and other highly confidential information.”

However, Andy Stone, the spokesperson for Meta, opposed the accusation, saying on Threads, “No one on the Threads engineering team is a former Twitter employee — that’s just not a thing.”

Cisco is providing cybersecurity training for free to the staff of the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). NHS staff, rejoice. To commemorate NHS’ 75th anniversary, Cisco is offering free cybersecurity training to the staff of NHS to improve their resilience amidst possible cyber threats. Cisco announced that the Cisco Networking Academy will facilitate this free cybersecurity training, also in support of the UK government’s recently unveiled NHS Long Term Workforce Plan. According to Cisco, NHS staff can access free, instructor-led, and self-guided mobile courses. 

Some training courses within this curriculum by Cisco are “Introduction to Cybersecurity,” which will help build much-needed basic security skills to improve resilience within the health service, and bespoke cybersecurity training pathways for more advanced skill sets and those who wish to learn more. The bespoke cybersecurity training pathways have modules that cover cybersecurity essentials, endpoint security, and network defense. 

This training will be very valuable so NHS staff know how to combat cybersecurity challenges and risks in the institutions. NHS’ vast network of connected devices, enormous volumes of sensitive information, and limited IT resources make it a vulnerable target for cyberattacks that will not just expose data but also interfere with the treatments of patients. 

“To future-proof the NHS for the next 75 years, awareness of how to keep it safe from cyberattacks will be paramount,” Elizabeth Barr, head of the Cisco Networking Academy in the UK and Ireland, stated. “In collaboration with the Open University, the new Cisco Networking Academy for the NHS will help close the current cybersecurity skills gap, ensuring everyone is empowered to help safeguard the future of our health service, as well as acquire new and exciting skills in an increasingly critical field.”

High-severity bug

Meanwhile, last Wednesday, Cisco warned of a high-severity bug in some of its data center switch models that would give a chance for attackers to break into encrypted traffic as well as read or modify it.

The vulnerability is named CVE-2023-20185 and was discovered during an internal security testing in the ACI Multi-Site CloudSec encryption feature of the Cisco Nexus 9000 Series Fabric Switches data center.

Thus, Cisco is advising its customers who are currently using the Cisco ACI Multi-Site CloudSec encryption feature for the Cisco Nexus 9332C, Nexus 9364C switches, and the Cisco Nexus N9K-X9736C-FX Line Card to deactivate it immediately. Price wars are rampant worldwide, but the EV price wars in China, particularly, are the loudest, especially after Tesla suddenly slashed the manufacturer’s suggested retail prices of its Model Y and Model 3 cars by around $7,000 each, sparking concerns. 

The next day after this move, Tesla showrooms in China were flooded with customers to protest. This is because Tesla had slowly been increasing the price of all its EV car units in China for the past two years, without discounts, then all of a sudden, slashed the prices of some of its car offerings this year. Specifically, customers who just bought a new Tesla car late last year were furious.

There’s a brand-new, funky, and modern laptop that is giving people nostalgic feels. News media outlets stumbled upon a new laptop called the Book 8088, sold on AliExpress for around $200 and bringing in features reminiscent of the IBM PC 5150. 

IBM debuted this PC 5150 in August 1981. It was not the world’s first personal computer, but nonetheless successful thanks to its top-quality construction and expandability. The IBM PC 5150 was designed by lab director Bill Lowe, together with 11 other IBM engineers in Boca Raton, a city in Florida. 

Now, there’s a brand-new and modern laptop on the market taking people back in time. Media outlets stumbled upon it like unearthing an artifact from the past. Here’s a look at its features. 

Features

Called Book 8088, this netbook-sized personal computer may not be a pure reproduction of the 1980s IBM Personal Computer 5150, but it combines genuine original parts with newer hardware to recreate the 5150’s specs, allowing this modern laptop to do the same things 5150 does in a more cramped space. 

Moreover, the Intel 8088 processor in Book 8088 is also very vintage. Plus, it has an open socket for an Intel 8087 coprocessor. 

And that’s not all. Its Motorola 6845 CGA display controller is also original. 

Most of the chips in this laptop do the same things the chips from the original IBM computer do, but taking up lesser space. Particularly, the 640KB RAM is provided by just one 512KB chip and another 128KB chip instead of being incorporated a few kilobytes at a time on the motherboard or through a bulky RAM expansion card.

A single 64KB EPROM chip in Book 8088 replaces the total of six 8KB ROM chips in IBM PC 5150.

Furthermore, several of its motherboard and graphics functions are also consolidated into CPLDs or complex programmable logic device chips. Essentially CPLDs are chips capable of simulating the capabilities of other chips. 

Not only those but Book 8088 also has a hard disk functionality an integrated XTIDE controller provides, enabling people to connect 16-bit parallel ATA storage devices to the laptop’s eight-bit data bus. 

It also has a CH375S chip powering up the USB port and an LCD screen connected to the laptop’s video hardware via a different board hidden underneath its thick display bezel.

Finally, Book 8088 also ships with MS-DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.0, together with other software.

AliExpress customers who got the chance to purchase this laptop share their insights about it. 

One AliExpress customer said it is a “nice little computer, but with “flaws.” They wrote, “Nice little computer. Has its flaws but a lot of fun to Tinker around with. Runs just about anything that an 8088 could run. My biggest beef with it is that it has a lack of external connections and it does not have a very good screen. But overall, a nice little computer to Tinker with and play classic DOS games on.”

Another customer said it “worked out of the box” and is “such a fun machine.”
