Blast from the past

Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, once traveled to Amsterdam in the Netherlands, visited the art gallery at Rijksmuseum, and stumbled upon a painting that appears to show an iPhone. Is time travel real?

“There was an iPhone in one of the paintings,” he said.

The painting, titled “Man Handing a Letter to a Woman in the Entrance Hall,” was by Pieter de Hooch, a Dutch painter known for its genre works of tranquil domestic scenes with an open doorway. 

The controversial “Man Handing a Letter to a Woman in the Entrance Hall” painting showing an iPhone features a domestic scene painted against the backdrop of a canal in Amsterdam. 

The man in the painting is seemingly holding an iPhone in his hands and about to give it to a woman sitting on a chair beside him. 

The title, nevertheless, is quite loud, saying it is not an iPhone but a letter. Besides, looking at the painting’s detail, no Apple icon is even seen or clear. 

But it is baffling people, including the Apple CEO.

Did Apple really invent the iPhone? 

People asked him about the painting in a press conference, where he quipped he was “not so sure” anymore whether Apple really invented and created the iPhone. 

“I always thought I knew when the iPhone was invented, but now I’m not so sure anymore,” Cook said. “It’s tough to see but I swear it’s there.”

Not the first instance

That was not the first instance an “iPhone” was spotted on paintings created several years ago. 

There was an artwork from the 1900s titled “Mr. Pynchon and the Settling of Springfield,” wherein a man in the painting is holding a tiny black rectangular object that resembles an iPhone, looking directly at it as if he is taking a selfie. 

“Mr. Pynchon and the Settling of Springfield” was by Umberto Romano, an Italian artist who completed it in 1937. The painting depicts the arrival of settlers during the 17th century.

But wait, there’s more. Another instance of an “iPhone” appearing in an old painting was in “The Expected One” by Ferdinand George Waldmüller, who completed the artwork in 1860. The painting shows a girl lost in her “iPhone” as she walks on the fields. However, the object is actually a prayer book.

Yesterday, prosecutors from South Korea arrested and indicted a former executive of Samsung accused of stealing vital trade secrets of the company that he will use to build a copycat computer chip factory in China, news from the Associated Press reported.

The South Korean prosecutors identified the man as a 65-year-old ex-Samsung employee who stole the company’s factory blueprints and clean-room designs dated 2018 and 2019. Other personal information about the suspect are not revealed. 

South Korea described the material he stole as “national core technology,” which is a category of technology that may potentially threaten national security and the economy if disclosed abroad. 

Moreover, authorities also stated that the material he stole is worth at least $236 million to Samsung, news from the Manila Times said. 

They also described the suspect as an “undisputed top domestic expert in semiconductor manufacturing” who had worked in the industry for several years.

The man had worked for Samsung for 18 years and held executive positions for a decade at SK Hynix. SK Hynix is also a notable chip maker in South Korea and one of the leaders in the memory chip market industry. 

Later on, he also reportedly established chip manufacturing companies in China and Singapore with the help of Chinese and Taiwanese investors. More so, he even promised higher pay to hundreds of chip experts from Samsung and SK Hynix to lure them into his work. 

Suwon’s district prosecutor’s office said he planned to use the materials he stole to build his own copycat chipmaking facility in Xian, a city in China. Samsung already has a chip factory in that city. 

“It is a serious crime that can have a tremendous negative impact on our economic security by shaking the foundation of the domestic semiconductor industry at a time when competition for chip production is intensifying every day,” the prosecutors told news organizations yesterday. “The semiconductor industry accounted for 16.5 percent of South Korea’s total exports in 2022… and is a national security asset.”

Samsung has not yet released an official statement as of press time. 

Amidst controversies in semiconductor manufacturing

This incident came amidst semiconductor manufacturing feuds and controversies, particularly between the United States and China. 

Samsung is among the largest producers of chips and mobile phones in the world, and contributes greatly to the gross domestic product of South Korea. 

Currently, a significant portion of its production is based in China. The East Asian country heavily relies on a steady supply of chips made by foreign companies for its huge industry in electronics manufacturing.

But, the United States implemented a series of export controls in 2022 to prevent China from obtaining the world’s most advanced chips the country may allegedly use to create cutting-edge weaponry and big technologies like artificial intelligence.

These sanctions have angered Beijing, the Chinese capital, and accused Washington of “technological terrorism.”

The image shows what the app will look like on mobile and features a text that reads, “Coming soon.”

The Verge’s Alex Heath said this standalone application would be based on Instagram, which is also under Meta, and would also integrate with ActivityPub, a decentralized social networking protocol. 

With those being said, people using the new app can hypothetically transfer their accounts and followers from the other social networking platforms they have, so there’s generally no need to start from scratch. 

The leaked image also said the new app is internally codenamed “Project 92.” However, The Verge also noted that they have seen documents saying this new platform will be called “Threads.”

“We’ve been hearing from creators and public figures who are interested in having a platform that is sanely run, that they believe that they can trust and rely upon for distribution,” Cox said in The Verge report, throwing a direct shade at how Musk handles Twitter, which he bought last year. 

Cox added that Meta already has gotten celebrities committing to using the app, including DJ Slime. He said they are also in the middle of discussions with other A-list personalities, such as Oprah and even the Dalai Lama. 

He also told The Verge coding has begun for the app in January, and the company will make the app available “as soon as [they] can.”

“I don’t think he’s dialed it in quite right yet,” Williams told Bloomberg, warning that Twitter’s brand might just be like Musk’s personal brand.

What this integration can do

Presently available on the Webex App Hub, this integration lets platform users unify content and functionality across digital signage, room scheduling, collaboration tools, and other necessary resources to support 22Miles’ operations. 

The integration of Webex into 22Miles’ platform enables digital signage content takeover on Cisco’s Board and Room Series devices. The Cisco Board Series and Room Series are video conferencing solutions from the digital communications technology corporation. 

Users can then distribute live and recorded videos, presentations, and how-to guides to Cisco devices. 

Moreover, the integration also allows employees to instantly add meeting recordings to the app used by these employees. With this, members can share Webex meeting recordings and presentation materials, without the hassle, across devices, further enhancing transparency and communication throughout 22Miles. 

And there’s more. The integration also lets customers add interactive meeting reservation functionalities via the Webex RoomOS. With this, employees can view and reserve available workspaces through various platforms, such as Cisco Board and Room Series devices, desktops, and mobile.

Building cars takes so much time, so they can run efficiently once sold to customers. But take Tesla’s approach to manufacturing cars differently. The company can literally build cars in just 45 seconds (but that does not mean they won’t function great), especially at Tesla’s new Giga Laboratory concept in Chengdu, China it unveiled recently. Here’s the news story. 

Building cars in 45 seconds

Over the weekend, Tesla announced a brand-new Giga Laboratory concept in China’s city of Chengdu. Chengdu is the capital of southwestern China’s Sichuan province and also the largest city in that province. 

“The country’s first ‘Tesla GIGA Laboratory’ made a stunning debut. Tesla’s ‘Most Beautiful Store in Chengdu’ unveiled the mystery: An immersive experience of the magic of ‘building a car in 45 seconds’. Meet up with friends ‘Chat and take a break’,” said the company on its official Weibo account, translated to English. Weibo is a Chinese social media platform for the Chinese people. 

Physical stores like this are innate to operations in countries like China. Aside from being capable of building a car in just 45 seconds, customers who visit this Giga Laboratory can also meet up with friends as they watch the manufacturing process of Tesla vehicles. 

Also, this Giga Laboratory will not only feature cars but also manufacturing robots and other exhibits that will provide automotive geeks with something to talk about.

Moreover, Tesla’s powertrain technology will also be highlighted at the new Giga Laboratory, showcasing certain parts of the drivetrain. The EV maker’s powertrain technology is its electric powertrain system that consists of the AC induction motor, single-speed gearbox, charger, lithium-ion battery pack, thermal management system, and powertrain system communication and controls. 

Feel Tesla’s hardcore beauty

Over the weekend, Tesla Asia’s official account on Twitter also said this new Giga Laboratory will allow customers to “feel the hardcore beauty of Tesla.”

“The first ‘GIGA LAB’  Tesla store held its opening ceremony today. The interior of ‘GIGA LAB’ imitates the Shanghai Gigafactory and shows the manufacturing process of Tesla vehicles. Here, customers can feel the hardcore beauty of Tesla,” @Tesla_Asia tweeted. 

Many of those who have heard about this news are commenting that it is “so cool,” “beautiful,” and “futuristic.”

In 2019, Tesla said it would scale down its physical retail stores and focus on online sales. But this did not happen. Instead, over the past three years, Tesla’s brick-and-mortar shops and service facilities, such as this recently unveiled laboratory, have doubled. 

For instance, there are five of the company’s Gigafactories right now, located in Nevada, Texas and New York in the United States, and in Berlin in Germany and in Shanghai in China.

Among the reasons Tesla keeps building such establishments, especially in China, is the reliance of the Chinese market on physical retail. Thus, this new Giga Laboratory concept will attract more buyers from the East Asian country.

HP At Cannes 2023, Its Partnership With Decathlon, And More – HP News

There’s a lot of good news about HP recently. First, HP has reaffirmed its long-time partnership with the Cannes Film Festival, as the former provided printed supplies to the latter. 

Second, HP has also lately partnered with world-renowned sporting goods retailer Decathlon to create Decathlon’s footwear products. Then, HP led the list of the brands that sold the most printers in Asia-Pacific. Here is the news round-up. 

HP, Cannes Film Festival

HP has been a proud partner – and not just a partner, but a major partner – of the Cannes Film Festival for over 15 years. It is the official digital imaging partner of Cannes. This year, during the 76th Cannes film fest that happened last month, HP was able to further strengthen the partnership by providing the event with printed materials.

The information technology company took charge of producing more than 1,500 square meters of material for the event. Cannes’ organizers chose HP’s Latex technology because of how it aligns with the commitments of the film festival on sustainability. This Latex technology from HP is unique as it uses Aqueous Dispersion Polymerization so it can produce more durable prints.

Using HP’s Latex R2000 and 3100, two of its printers, local print service provider H2O produced all the signages and displays used during the event, from banners to outdoor signages. 

“Since 1939, HP has provided innovative technology to help filmmakers tell stories that change the world. HP is committed to changing the world for the better: in human rights, equality, and climate change; an effort that needs great storytelling to have the impact we all need,” HP’s statement on Cannes’ official website said. “Our passion for storytelling and filmmaking has never waned, and we’ve been a proud partner of the Festival de Cannes for over 15 years, delivering the computing and print technology that powers it.”

HP, Decathlon

Meanwhile, HP has also recently partnered with Decathlon and Lonati Group to produce sustainable footwear for the sporting goods retailer. Lonati Group is a company started in Italy and has since provided machinery for textile products.

The collaboration makes use of HP’s 3D printing technology, particularly its Multi Jet Fusion technology, together with Lonati Group’s shoe-upper knitting machines to produce sustainable footwear. 

It combines HP’s state-of-the-art 3D printer with Lonati’s XT-MACHINE and Double Cylinder E1530XS knitting machines to craft the product.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with HP’s Personalization & 3D Printing business and Lonati Group on this project that exemplifies our commitment to sustainability,” Decathlon’s Exploration Leader, Phillipe Seille, stated. 

HP leads the printer market in Asia-Pacific

HP has sold the most printers in Asia-Pacific recently, according to IDC, a market intelligence firm. 

HP topped the list with the most market share at 36.5 percent. Trailing behind are Epson at 19.7 percent and Canon at 17 percent. 

Collectively, the printer market in the region recorded a whopping 13.8 percent year-on-year growth for the first quarter of 2023, shipping 8.7 million units. These figures can be attributed to the growing demand for inkjet products, particularly from the home office, and small- and medium-sized enterprises market.
