New Sonic Game Might Reboot Whole Franchise

According to Takashi Iizuka, the head of Team Sonic, the next installment in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise might be a soft relaunch. A teaser trailer for the yet-to-be-named Sonic game was showed off at May’s Sonic Central webcast, the same event that unveiled Sonic Colors: Ultimate. While the teaser revealed nothing about Sonic’s future adventure, it has been announced that the game will be released in 2022.

Despite the fact that Sega and Team Sonic haven’t revealed the project’s official name, it’s thought to be “Sonic Rangers,” as indicated in a press statement sent to the media following the event. Sega was quick to respond to the alleged leak, informing fans that the press release was an older version that was sent out in error. While it’s unclear if Sonic 2022 will be named Sonic Rangers or not, it appears that the forthcoming game will act as a relaunch for the franchise.

Takashi Iizuka, leader of Team Sonic, revealed eager fans a few fresh information about the 2022 title when speaking with Sonic community website Sonic Stadium, all of which appear to imply the creators are aiming for a whole new world of adventure for Sonic and his buddies.

Team Sonic’s goal for the new game, according to Iizuka, is to build the framework for the next iteration of Sonic games, bringing new challenges and experiences for gamers. “Sonic Adventure created the basis for 20 years of Sonic games after its release,” Iizuka told the newspaper. “In the same manner, I sincerely hope that this new title, which will be released in 2022, builds the foundation for future Sonic titles – that is the premise behind the team’s challenge.”

While Iizuka’s comments do not rule out the possibility that Sonic 2022 will be a definitive reboot of the beloved franchise, he did say that the development team “has been spending their time to do something new and challenging” and that they are on a mission to “present to everyone a new Sonic game.”

Given that the game will be released on next-generation systems, a relaunch isn’t out of the question, and as the Sonic comics have shown, a new game may go in a variety of directions. Despite the fact that gamers have just seen a cinematic preview of the game so far, Team Sonic is expected to put the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S to the test with the fastest-paced Sonic adventure ever.

While cinematic films should not be mistaken with actual gameplay, the 2022 Sonic the Hedgehog game is expected to look as good as the announcement trailer suggests. Even if the next game isn’t a reinvention of the brand, it has the potential to be Sonic’s biggest and boldest appearance yet, thanks to current-generation systems’ ability to really unleash everything the Sonic series has to offer.

The live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie sequel, which is slated to enter theaters on April 8, 2022, is already shaping up to be a wonderful year for Sonic fans. Sonic the movie 2’s script has already leaked online, and while the sequel will undoubtedly have some large shoes to fill, the tale itself is already looking extremely intriguing for longtime fans of the franchise.
