The world of gaming is so triumphant nowadays that even the world of movies and entertainment has become interested in it. Maybe you’ve heard of the upcoming Warner Bros. Pictures film premiering this 2025, “A Minecraft Movie,” inspired by none other than the “Minecraft” game. But before that, there was the “Five Nights at Freddy’s” film.

In 2023, both professional actors and gaming influences graced the cast of this movie based on the popular point-and-click survival horror game. The “Five Nights at Freddy’s” game has a considerable fanbase that spans various editions in its series. In this story, you’ll get to know the most prominent “Five Nights at Freddy’s” games in chronological order – from 1983 to, get this, 2029. Let’s begin.

‘Five Nights At Freddy’s 4’

The list of every significant game in the “Five Nights at Freddy’s” series starts with “Five Nights at Freddy’s 4,” which is set in 1983, the decade that saw the takeoff of video gaming, Madonna, “Star Wars,” and flashy fashion styles.

This game takes place inside a child’s bedroom, think of Disney’s “Monsters, Inc.,” where you must avoid getting attacked by nightmarish animatronics stalking your sleep and waking life.

Unlike other games in the series, you won’t have access to security cameras to monitor the movement of the animatronic monsters, so you must wholly rely on audio cues. And, of course, the game has to follow the theme of the times. In between nights, you can also play Atari-style minigames (Atari is a 1970s gaming console) that revolve around the story of a juvenile boy consistently tormented by his older brother.

‘Five Nights At Freddy’s: Sister Location’

What’s next after “4” is “Sister Location.” There is no official information about the year the story here takes place, but gaming insiders say it is right after “Five Nights at Freddy’s 4,” until around 1987. So we’re still in the 80s here.

Sometime in the late 1980s, there’s Circus Baby’s Entertainment, a sister location of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, where you play as the new employee who must perform maintenance work while defending yourself against the murderous animatronics.

‘Five Nights At Freddy’s 2’

What comes after is “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2,” which takes place immediately after the “Sister Location” events in November 1987, horror season.

This time, you perform the roles of night security guards Fritz Smith and Jeremy Fitzgerald in a fictional pizzeria. Now, you must defend yourself from the animatronic mascots in the restaurant.

You cannot leave the pizzeria, but you can get access to a flashlight and security cameras that will allow you to monitor the whereabouts of the animatronics. You’ll also be wearing a mask that will let you mimic the appearance of the monsters so you cannot be detected. Once you are detected, it’s game over.

The Atari-style minigames are also here, including phone calls you can make to learn about the restaurant. Phone calls, not Facebook Messenger calls – to keep up with the setting in the 80s.

‘Five Nights At Freddy’s’

Okay, the main game is just number four on this chronological rundown. This game is believed to have taken place in 1993.

Here, you play as the night security guard of a family-owned pizzeria. He is Mike Schmidt, and Schmidt must finish his shifts while avoiding the murderous plots from the animatronic characters wandering and loitering around the pizzeria every night.

Like in the other games, you can access security cameras to monitor the monsters’ movements. But, there is the addition of steel doors you can use to lock out the villains. It is game over if you fail to keep the animatronics out of the office.

‘Five Nights At Freddy’s 3’

The magic word here is “2023.” That’s two decades after the previous game on this list. So, the past will really feel nostalgic, and if you have been playing the “Five Nights at Freddy’s” main game for quite some time, it’ll require some adjustment on your end when it comes to the time setting of this game.

Here, you take on the role of a security guard who must also defend themself from animatronics, but this time, the monster is called Springtrap. Springtrap roams the attraction where the game is set while battling the hallucinations of other animatronics. If you become engulfed by the hallucinations and fail to keep Springtrap out of the office, you will be jump scared, like in other games in this series, and the game is over.

‘Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria Simulator’

The next game is “Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria Simulator.” So this is a bit different and doesn’t have a particular timeline as it appears like a “spinoff” of the series. In this game, you develop and run your own restaurant. You design pizzas, feed kids, and achieve high scores. It’s not as horrific as the other “Freddy’s” games.

‘Five Nights At Freddy’s: Security Breach’

Here is where things get more interesting. “Security Breach” takes place between 2024 and 2029. Futuristic.

In this game, you find yourself in a vast entertainment complex where you play a young boy named Gregory who must evade the attacks of the animatronic monsters and the night guard. The goal: to survive until the morning.

The rest of the games in the series are “Five Nights at Freddy’s 1,” Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted,” “Five Nights at Freddy’s AR: Special Delivery,” “Five Nights at Freddy’s: Into the Pit,” and other spinoff games.

Since the original “Freddy” game, the timeline and lore of this horror adventure have grown dramatically. There’s even a movie adaptation, right? Fans have created something out of it through the years, which spans side games, fan-made games, designs, and more. However, those above are the seven games that the developers consider canon.

There you have it. The most significant “Five Nights at Freddy’s” games arranged according to the year their stories occur. Should you want a fusion of horror and history, you must shop for these games today. Spooky nights await.
