The world is focused on this year’s Olympics in Paris, but gamers at home can enjoy this new update on PlayStation 5.

This week, Sony rolled out a new system update for the PS5, 24.05-09.60.00, for July 2024. The patch notes reveal enhancements for a multitude of social features.

Weighing just above 1 GB, the new update includes the usual firmware stability enhancements and some software updates for the DualSense controllers. Here are the details.

What’s included in the update

The best parts are being able to invite your friends to game sessions and the voice command feature.

With the update, you can now invite your buddies and loved ones to game sessions simply by sharing a URL to the session. Launch the game session action card and choose Share Link to do so. Afterward, simply scan the QR code using your mobile device to share the link.

However, note that this is only available for open sessions for everybody. It started becoming available on July 24th.

A Voice Command now supports launching Game Help action cards simply by saying, “Show Game Help.”

But the preview of this voice command feature is only available in English for players with accounts for the PlayStation Network in the United States and Great Britain.

Other features of the update include enhanced system software performance and stability, device software updates for some DualSense wireless joysticks to improve stability further, and amplified messages and usability on some screens.

Some players report issues

Nevertheless, while others called the update “amazing,” some reported issues following this update, such as their consoles crashing.

@dazhuchison posted on X, “@PlayStation I’ve had nothing but issues since the new update… my ps5 slim, which is only 2½ months old, has crashed 5 times with error code CE-108262-9. Today when booting up, the console lights were blinking red, but okay after restart, and all my games are playing glitchy (emoji)”

Sony occasionally rolls out updates for its PlayStation 5 to improve the console’s features, performance, and security. An update may include bug fixes, new functionalities, system optimizations, and enhanced user experience.

These updates are crucial to maintain system stability, protect against security threats, and ensure compatibility with the latest games and apps. They also provide brand-new features and enhancements based on feedback from gamers, keeping the PS5 current and competitive. Overall, regular updates guarantee the console remains a reliable and cutting-edge gaming platform.
