PlayStation Exclusives Wins Most GOTY In 2020

PlayStation exclusive titles had the most Game of the Year awards last year, considerably more than any other console manufacturer or publisher. 2020 has been a bountiful year for Sony in terms of high-quality game releases.

The Last of Us Part 2 perhaps is the biggest game to launch exclusively on the company’s consoles in the past 12 months, although there have been other high profile games as well. This includes a spinoff of Marvel’s Spider-Man in the form of Spider-Man: Miles Morales for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 along with Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima.

As well as having more big names launching in 2020, Sony also had what a lot of fans regarded to be a better launch lineup for the PlayStation 5. While Microsoft had several Xbox Series X|S exclusives, Sony had a better collection of games available on the new console.

This included the latest Spider-Man game along with Godfall and Astro’s Playroom. Microsoft is apparently trying to fix this issue and has even obtained Bethesda, which could mean future franchises such as The Elder Scrolls could become exclusives to its platforms.

According to GOTYPicks, PlayStation exclusive titles have received more Game of the Year praises than every other game. The blog is centered on counting the number of awards every title wins over the course of a year.

Leading the way for the tech giant was The Last of Us Part 2, which picked up a staggering 141 awards from various gaming outlets and sites. The next most awarded title was Ghost of Tsushima with 21 awards and Final Fantasy 7 Remake with 13 wins.

Persona 5 Royale and Spider-Man: Miles Morales both garnered a small number of awards. This meant PlayStation exclusive titles received a total of 177 Game of the Year awards on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

While 2020 was a great year for Sony, this is contradictory true for Microsoft. Although the Xbox Series X|S has had a successful release and is still sold out in the majority of retailers and regions, the actual release lineup for the console was frustrating. The company also failed to have any considerable high profile game released last year, with Halo Infinite being postponed into 2021 after a disappointing reveal back in the summer.

It is not really shocking that Sony has had more success in the Game of the Year department. Both Microsoft and Nintendo failed to have many major exclusive releases last year, while PlayStation consoles had a larger collection of exclusives available for gamers. If this continues this 2021, fans should anticipate seeing identical results when it comes to winning awards.
