Based on information on past Sony consoles it has been predicted that the PlayStation 5 will have its first price drop six months after its launch. This price drop will most probably not come from Sony itself, but rather the vendors selling the next-gen machine. This could prove to be really great news for most fans considering that the PlayStation 5 is the most costly Sony console in PlayStation history.
The PlayStation 5 has already proven to be infamously hard for fans to get their hands on. When the system was first made available for preordering there were a plethora of problems as retailer’s websites crashed and it becomes very obvious that Sony wasn’t going to be enough units to meet demand.
These problems continued throughout the preordering times for the PlayStation 5 and have now continued into the release. Yesterday, vendors such as Walmart had launch windows that allowed fans to order online, but every timeslot was sold out almost instantly.
According to experts, it is most likely that the PlayStation 5 will have its price drop six months after its release date. Commonly around that period is when retailers start providing discounts with summer sales events or other identical sales events.
In the past, many Sony systems have been discounted by approximately 6%, which could save fans about $30 on one PlayStation console. In addition, by the one year mark, the PlayStation 5 could get another 8% discount which would save fans at least $70 altogether.
It is worth noting that these discounts are not official since a price drop from Sony itself would most probably take much longer. It took the tech giant almost 2 years after launch to officially announce a price drop for the PlayStation 4, and that was only about $50 off on the console. It wouldn’t be shocking to see that Sony will wait this long to slash the cost of the PlayStation 5, especially seeing how well it has been selling at its current price.
Regardless, these forecasts about the PlayStation 5 getting discounts aren’t set in stone. A lot of things could still change between today and six months from now that could see the PlayStation 5 stay at the same price or drop at even a lower price than the data has been predicted. The only way to know what will really happen with the price of the PlayStation 5 is to patiently wait until there is an official announcement.
