Based on a recent survey, it appears that most game studio and their corresponding developers aren’t interested in receiving crypto payments nor working with anything related to non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The Game Developers Conference released the survey on January 21, entitled State of the Game Industry 2022. The survey in question asked 2,700 game developers how interested they were in NFTs and cryptocurrency, in general. However, the overall consensus seems to be a disappointment for gamers, as this particular community has shown great interest in NFTs and crypto.
Most of the survey respondents (72%) revealed that the studio they work for is “not interested” in using crypto as a payment method and is also “not interested” in NFTs (70%). Only 1% of the respondents answered that their studio was in the middle of developing NFTs or are already using crypto as a payment option.
Out of all the 14 comments made by the developers regarding crypto and NFTs, only one person made a generally positive statement saying, “It’s the wave of the future.” Meanwhile, the rest of the respondents were either critical or made backhanded comments.
One developer implied that the entire NFT and crypto industry is questionable, saying:

Another was more concerned about the gaming industry’s future if it chooses the path towards crypto, stating:

Gamers, collectors, and traders currently drive the NFT market. On the leading NFT marketplace called OpenSea, collectible items primarily drive the trading volume. For instance, the Azuki collection on OpenSea currently has the highest seven-day trading volume at 27,163 ETH ($6.5 million). Blockchain gaming already exists now, though, and most of them incorporate NFTs into their gameplay.
The respondents also aren’t big fans of metaverse gaming. Nowadays, many gaming studios are working hard to develop devices that gamers can use for a more immersive Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) experience. However, the report states that approximately a third of the survey respondents think that “the metaverse concept will never deliver on its promise.”
