In celebration of Sonic the Hedgehog’s 30th anniversary, Sega announced that they are releasing new games and revealing huge announcements for the whole year of 2021.
The news came from Sega’s advertisement from the Licensing Source Book Europe’s summer 2020 edition which was originally published last July. In addition, the developer said that they are planning a year of celebration for Sonic which includes digital content, new games, major announcements, and a custom made licensing program.
The advertisement also highlighted different brand statistics such as more than $6 billion in lifetime franchise revenue as well as more than 90 million sales in Sonic games. Takashi Iizuka, Sonic’s team head, previously announced in the last SXSW Gaming in 2019 that the development of the next main Sonic the Hedgehog game is currently in progress.
In addition, Paramount Pictures also confirmed that they are planning to release the second Sonic the Hedgehog movie on April 8, 2022. The first movie broke the opening records for video game adaptation when it was released in February 2020.
The live-action adaptation featured Sonic and his human friend Tom teaming up to save the world from the mad evil genius Dr. Robotnik. The movie reached a gross $146 million in the US and $306 million worldwide which makes it the third highest-grossing film of 2020.
